How About Focusing on Energy Ideas that Actually Work

What makes a politician think he or she can do venture capital investing? Some of the smartest minds in the world have a tough time doing it. I guess when you are not playing with your own money, it becomes easy and you think yourself an expert.

Presidents Bush and Obama have wasted a lot of America?s time and money on technologies that didn?t work, with companies that a normal banker would have never invested in.

President Bush subsidized and mandated a fuel that didn?t exist, cellulosic ethanol. President Obama gave loans to solar companies that didn?t have a viable technology. Both failed, with our money. Neither helped our energy future with these reckless bets with taxpayer money, and both only cost the taxpayer their investment.

Can we let grown ups handle the wheel, please?

Corn-based ethanol is eating up our corn crop and driving up prices, especially considering the drought going on in the Midwest. The fuel has turned out to not be what it was promised, but because the farm lobby is so strong and the presidential race starts in a corn heaven called Iowa, it?s not likely to change.

Every president since Richard Nixon has said he will get us off of foreign oil -- they have all fallen way short. Governor Romney now says he can get us off of foreign oil by 2020.

I believe we can get off of non-North American oil, but not by 2020. I also am for renewable energy, the electric car and biofuels. However, the government picking winners and losers is making us taxpayers the big losers.

Romney?s plan lacks specifics, but the idea works. We need a real audit of our true reserves of energy so we can develop an energy plan -- we are currently the only developed country in the world without one. Romney also puts a huge emphasis on natural gas, which I agree is our bridge to the future.

What we need is the President to quit investing in technologies that are not proven and instead force the EPA to rule, one way or the other, on fracking, pipelines and deep-water drilling immediately and stop waiting until it is more politically expedient (i.e. after the election).

We have no job creation event on the horizon, but an energy plan could put these people to work who had left manufacturing (after manufacturing declined) for housing, only to see that bubble burst with nothing replace it.

We also need to invest in alternative energy that actually works. These alternative energies need infrastructure -- if we are to invest we should invest in the energy grid that can handle renewables and then let private enterprise build on these electric highways.

After all, when farm-to-market roads and the interstates were first built, they opened up commerce by creating the infrastructure. The government didn?t have to build trucking companies, but rather let private enterprise succeed and fail on the infrastructure it had built.

Government has a role -- not on the winners and losers side but rather the infrastructure side and on the policy side of energy policy as to whether to allow fracking, pipelines and drilling. ?And, if a loan guarantee is made, make it only for viable business and technology, as there is a time when the government is the lender of last resort.

I also believe we have to reevaluate our goals of foreign oil; we get over a third of our imported oil from Mexico and Canada. Why would we want our neighbors and partners selling oil to others? ?

As to the future, cellulosic ethanol may be like nuclear fusion -- 10 years away and always will be. However, if the enzyme is ever broken down this fuel is the game changer we have heard it is.

Sodium-cooled fast reactors and space-based solar energy may be the future, and this is where we need a ?Manhattan project?. Tell our NASA scientists you will let them go to Pluto, Mars or build Newt Gingrich a house on the moon, if they first figure these things out.

Before we get to that, a bridge to the future is the establishment of an energy policy and joining the rest of the developed world. Getting off of foreign oil is a possibility, but it won?t happen by chance. We need a plan.

When deciding upon a web-hosting provider, there will be tons of concerns you need answered prior to settling on the service that is certainly appropriate for you. Most typically, when coping with customer service, there tends to be a conflict of interest. Not surprisingly, they?re wanting to sell a service to you, so their ultimate aim is always to make their internet hosting attributes sound significantly improved than the following option.

Some organizations will even stretch the truth just to attract business. For these customer service representatives, it really is all about securing the deal and achieving a sale. But, what in regards to the consumer? Inside the long run, it?s really detrimental for businesses to lure a customer beneath false, misinformed or vague pretenses. If client demands usually are not effectively satisfied or the business doesn?t deliver as promised, consumers are confident to spot negative feedback and spread the word about their experiences.

Customer service is place into place to assist shoppers make the choices which are right for them. Just because a corporation offers low rates, does not mean it?ll give the right services that a specific client needs. They may well will need particular features to attain all of their World-wide-web goals and desires. It truly is the responsibility of customer service to ensure that all inquiries are answered with client satisfaction in mind.

As a consumer, familiarizing yourself with the ins and outs of net hosting providers and services is rather effective. Arming yourself with relevant knowledge will enable you to pinpoint the type of questions you need to ask a customer representative when looking for a service. How will you be capable of comparison shop when you don?t even know several of the basics of web hosting? You?ll find a lot of aspects of deciding on a web-hosting provider that you must take into consideration. Below you may come across a few areas of web hosting to keep in mind when researching web-hosting corporations:

E mail: Possessing access to far more than 1 e mail account by means of a internet hosting firm is really desirable. Very good questions to ask customer support concerning email is how numerous accounts you?ll obtain. Will they supply a catch-all account? Will there be any limitations towards the space per account or the size allowed for attachments?

Disk Space and Bandwidth: The answers to questions pertaining to these topics will establish your limitations with regards to internet site space and Net website traffic. Ask internet hosting customer service reps how several sub-domains are allowed. How much tricky disk space will you get? Just how much maximum bandwidth?

Information and facts Protection: For some, backing up facts is exceptionally important. A prospective consumer will wish to know if a web-hosting provider has any backup policies. Will it expense more fees to retrieve these backups, if provided? How many times for the duration of a week, month or year are files backed up?

Realizing somewhat bit about associated net hosting topics ahead of approaching customer support enables you to get the most out of the questions. Inside the end, using the help of a reliable customer service rep with fantastic intentions, you could or might not choose a specific internet hosting business for your business.

Gillen to speak at Siena coaches clinic - Blogs - Times Union

Pete Gillen, who led teams to nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament, will be a guest lecturer at the Siena Basketball Coaches Clinic on Oct. 20 in the Alumni Recreation Center.

Gillen went 392-221 during stints with Xavier, Providence and Virginia. He guided Providence to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1997.

He was briefly linked to the Siena coaching opening in 2005, after Rob Lanier was fired. The Saints ended up hiring Fran McCaffery.

Coaches can register for the clinic for $50. Each additional coach on the same staff pays $25. Attendees will be provided a Siena polo shirt, a notebook and detailed practice plans.

Hurricane Isaac aftermath: Will FEMA have enough money?

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could have to ask Congress for more money once hurricane Isaac cleanup costs become clear. Approval is likely, but not a given anymore.

The US spent $141 billion for cleanup and recovery after hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

How much will hurricane Isaac cost?

While it is too early to know the answer, experts say it would not be surprising if the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) needs to ask Congress for more money once it assesses the damage from the storm.

?It would not surprise me at all,? says Albert Ashwood, former president of the National Emergency Management Association and the emergency management director of Oklahoma. ?The potential is there ? I know I talked to the Emergency Director of Arkansas, and they are very concerned about flooding.?

The total funding needs will depend on the amount of damage to public infrastructure. ?The cost estimates come after the storm passes and officials can get people safely back to their homes,? says David Maurstad, a former FEMA regional administrator. ?That?s a couple of weeks down the road.?

FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate says the agency is in good shape for the initial response to Isaac. ?We are very healthy with those funds going into this storm,? said Mr. Fugate on CNN on Wednesday morning. ?Unlike last year we had a lot of problems with that money, Congress and the president agreed to fully fund these accounts so going into this storm we?re in good shape for response.?

Fugate was mainly referring to the money needed for the initial response to the storm, such as pre-positioning supplies and personnel, says a FEMA official who requested that his name be withheld because he is not authorized to speak to the press about agency policy. Fugate was not referring to the amount of money needed for recovery, the official says.

The agency had $1.515 billion in its Disaster Relief Fund as of Wednesday morning, the official says. But?that money won?t be earmarked only for Isaac relief and recovery.

?Most states have open disasters out there,? says Mr. Ashwood, referring to disasters where the state has asked FEMA for money but has not received it yet. ?If you have to rebuild a bridge or a large road, that takes time.?

Hurricane Katrina which devastated Louisiana and Mississippi in 2005, illustrates how long it can take to find out the total cost of a storm. Congress continued spending money on levee and sea wall construction for at least three years afterward.

After major disasters, FEMA often has to go back to Congress to ask for more money to help pay for washed out bridges, public facilities that have lost roofs, or the rebuilding of a road.

In the past, getting supplemental money from Congress was relatively easy. For example, in fiscal year 2006, after hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Congress approved an additional $19.8 billion to help pay for levee rehabilitation, debris removal, and many other expenses.

But last year, some Republicans in the House balked when FEMA asked for additional funding because of a spate of natural disasters. They wanted cuts in other programs to offset the money FEMA needed. The standoff passed, however, and FEMA ultimately got its money.

?Up until the Republicans took the House in 2011, it was normal to pass an emergency supplemental spending bill every spring,? says economist Pete Davis, who advises Wall Street clients and formerly worked on the Hill. ?But the House ended the emergency supplementals since the general view is that it is pork.?

This year the number of declared disasters is down compared with last year. In FY 2011, there were 99 major disasters. So far in FY2012, according to FEMA, there have been 31 major disasters. On Thursday, President Obama declared a major disaster for Louisiana and Mississippi.

This year, notes Mr. Davis, ?There are a lot more wildfires than normal.?

Oklahoma's Ashwood can attest to that. This summer, 603 homes in four Oklahoma counties were lost to the raging fires. Some 85 percent of the homeowners did not have insurance. Many lived in rural areas and mobile homes. Ashwood says he has become frustrated with FEMA, which decided it would fund the homes lost in one county but not the other three.

?They decided 373 needed help and the rest did not. I don?t quite understand that,? he says.

In a letter to the state, Fugate wrote that the damaged areas were ?not of such severity and magnitude to warrant the designation of Individual Assistance? for the three counties.

Nokias unsafe cyclists promises things are about to change in confusing new teaser video

We know that Nokia's got something big planned for September 5th, and we're reasonably sure that it's going to be the company's new Windows Phone 8 flagship. To whet our appetites, it's released a 21-second teaser featuring a helmet-free cyclist smiling at the camera and not spending enough time watching where she's going. We can't find any clues in the footage (after the break), except that it's using the same font that we saw in the run up to the Pureview launch. Who knows, maybe we can get our hopes up for a Lumia device rocking that 41-megapixel sensor.

Finding Work As A Stay-At-Home Dad ? It's A Dad's Life

Much has been written about the challenges stay-at-home mothers face when making the decision to leave work for the preparation of a newborn child.

But with the number of stay-at-home dads more than doubling in the UK over the last decade, very little has been written documenting the troubles that stay-at-home dads also face themselves. For many, taking the decision to leave work and reside at home, whilst the mother continues to work, is in itself a difficult one.

Stay-at-home dads often struggle with the stereotypes put in place by society, particularly those stating that a dads role is to work and bring home the bacon.

However, an increasing number of stay-at-home dads are coming up with ways to resist these norms, mastering the perfect combination of enjoying stay-at-home fatherhood, whilst helping to generate extra pennies to supplement the family income.

Retailing Online

For those with an interest in being creative, why not use your skills to create a successful mini-business by selling your creations online?

From photography and painting to woodworking, the Internet plays host to a variety of handmade marketplaces where selling your items is easy. And what?s more, you can carry out making these creations with your children right at home, where everyone can join in the fun, whatever their age.

If you?re also a dab-hand at technology, there?s also a successful market in buying used electronics and refurbishing them to as good as new, in order to make a little profit. However, it?s probably best to undertake these jobs away from younger children, such as in the evenings, due to the problems associated with small electronic parts.

Market yourself well with your creations, and you have the ability to enjoy a profitable business.

Telecommuting

An increasing number of companies are outsourcing work to freelancers, particularly those who can provide administrative support.

Jobs such as copywriting, letter writing, book-keeping, web designing, and internet marketing can all be done from the comfort of the home, if you have easy access to a computer and internet connection.

Freelancing in a field that focuses on your existing skills and strengths is a good place to start. As the nature of work is designed to be flexible, freelancing is a great option for dads who value their stay-at-home status, but who are looking for an effective way to help to earn some extra income from the home.

Undertaking freelance jobs such as these are often more suitable when children are of nursery-age or have just started school, when you have a little more free time (and a free set of hands!) throughout the day.

Online jobs boards often offer an overview of all freelance vacancies available. By searching by location, for example ?jobs in Northampton?, it is possible to review not only what jobs are available, but also to refine your search by keyword and position-type in order to find a position most suitable for you.

Blogging

Blogs are increasingly becoming one of the most effective ways to freelance, particularly if you have a passion for writing.

Many dads have set up their own blogs documenting their parenting experience, offering advice to other stay-at-home parents, or just simply writing about their daily musings.

However, in order to do so, your blog must contain high quality, original and interesting content. Your blog can then start to generate income when joined to affiliate marketers. By linking your blog up to a site that sells products, you can earn money for clicks and commission when an item is sold.

Blogs are great to write at the end of the day when you have a little ?you-time? to reflect on the past day?s events. If you?ve made some homemade crafts with the kids, take some photos of their creations and post them onto your blog. And who knows, it could make for some fun and interesting content!

Offering Your Expertise

If you?re good in the garden or enjoy a spot of D.I.Y., offering your expertise out to family, friends and neighbours can be a great little money earner.

Jobs from mowing the lawn, weeding, painting and putting shelves up, are great ways of helping others who may not have time or be unable to carry out such tasks.

Making flyers advertising your expertise and popping them into your local village shop is a good way of getting the ball rolling. Once you?ve had your first customer, there?s nothing more powerful than the word of mouth!

And what?s more, you can often carry out these jobs with the kids in tow. In the summer, doing gardening tasks with the children can be a wonderful new way of spending time with them, a way to teach them new skills, as well as earning you some extra cash.
