Fasting makes brain tumors more vulnerable to radiation therapy

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

A new study from USC researchers is the first to show that controlled fasting improves the effectiveness of radiation therapy in cancer treatments, extending life expectancy in mice with aggressive brain tumors.

Prior work by USC professor of gerontology and biological sciences Valter Longo, corresponding author on the study and director of the Longevity Institute at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, has shown that short-term fasting protects healthy cells while leaving cancer cells vulnerable to the toxic effects of chemotherapy.

The latest study, appearing online once the embargo lifts in PLOS One, is the first to show that periods of fasting appear to have the same augmenting effect on radiation therapy in treating gliomas, the most commonly diagnosed brain tumor. Gliomas have a median survival of less than two years.

"With our initial research on chemotherapy, we looked at how to protect patients against toxicity. With this research on radiation, we're asking, what are the conditions that make cancer most susceptible to treatment? How can we replicate the conditions that are least hospitable to cancer?" Longo said.

Longo and his co-investigators studied the combination of fasting with radiation therapy and with the chemotherapy drug Temozolomide, currently the standard treatment for the treatment of brain tumors in adults after an attempt at surgical removal.

They found that controlled short-term fasting in mice, no more than 48 hours each cycle, improved the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy in treating gliomas. Despite the extremely aggressive growth of the type of brain tumor studied, more than twice as many mice who fasted and received radiation therapy survived to the end of the trial period than survived with radiation alone or fasting alone.

"The results demonstrate the beneficial role of fasting in gliomas and their treatment with standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy," the researchers write, who say the results indicate the benefits of short-term, controlled fasting for humans receiving treatment for brain tumors.

Longo cautions that patients should consult with their oncologist before undertaking any fasting: "You want to balance the risks. You have to do it right. But if the conditions are such that you've run out of options, short-term fasting may represent an important possibility for patients."

Sony announces NEXVG30 and fullframe NEXVG900 Handycams, we go handson

A full-frame camcorder for roughly 3 grand? Meet the Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam -- the company's first 35mm HD video camera. Taking cues from its Alpha A99, which was just announced today, Sony brought that camera's 24.3-megapixel full-frame sensor to a camcorder form factor, delivering shallow depth-of-field and much improved low-light sensitivity in a more practical package. The VG900 is compatible with E-mount lenses, and it's a fine stills shooter (like the A99, it's capable of 14-bit RAW captures), but it's best suited for high-end video production, where it offers 1080p recording at 24 or 60 frames-per-second through a sensor that features 45 times the area of a conventional camcorder. This model even adds some of Sony's picture effects from the stills line, such as soft focus and miniature mode, while certain filters, like partial color and high-contrast monochrome can even be added to video.

Also on order for today is the NEX-VG30 -- the successor to the VG20 -- which offers many of the same features, but with a 16.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor instead. If you're looking for a capable Handycam and don't want to spring for full-frame, this is your match. Both models include 270-degree swivel 921k-dot touch-enabled TruBlack LCDs and XGA OLED eye-level electronic viewfinders, along with Sony's new Multi Interface Shoe, which enables XLR microphone inputs through an optional accessory. The Handycams offer a new zoom seesaw level with multiple speeds for smooth, silent lens adjustments. There's also digital zoom functionality, which is likely to be more appropriate for the VG900, since that model's full-frame sensor has the pixels to spare. That flavor is quite costly, coming in at $3,299 without a lens, though an LA-EA3 mount adapter is included so you can attach full-frame-capable A-mount lenses. The VG30, for its part, will retail for $1,800 body only, or $2,700 when paired with Sony's new 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS power zoom lens -- a $300 savings, considering that optic's $1,200 standalone price tag. The VG900 is slated to ship beginning in late October, while the VG30 will hit stores in November, but you can take a closer look right now in our hands-on gallery below.

How About Focusing on Energy Ideas that Actually Work

What makes a politician think he or she can do venture capital investing? Some of the smartest minds in the world have a tough time doing it. I guess when you are not playing with your own money, it becomes easy and you think yourself an expert.

Presidents Bush and Obama have wasted a lot of America?s time and money on technologies that didn?t work, with companies that a normal banker would have never invested in.

President Bush subsidized and mandated a fuel that didn?t exist, cellulosic ethanol. President Obama gave loans to solar companies that didn?t have a viable technology. Both failed, with our money. Neither helped our energy future with these reckless bets with taxpayer money, and both only cost the taxpayer their investment.

Can we let grown ups handle the wheel, please?

Corn-based ethanol is eating up our corn crop and driving up prices, especially considering the drought going on in the Midwest. The fuel has turned out to not be what it was promised, but because the farm lobby is so strong and the presidential race starts in a corn heaven called Iowa, it?s not likely to change.

Every president since Richard Nixon has said he will get us off of foreign oil -- they have all fallen way short. Governor Romney now says he can get us off of foreign oil by 2020.

I believe we can get off of non-North American oil, but not by 2020. I also am for renewable energy, the electric car and biofuels. However, the government picking winners and losers is making us taxpayers the big losers.

Romney?s plan lacks specifics, but the idea works. We need a real audit of our true reserves of energy so we can develop an energy plan -- we are currently the only developed country in the world without one. Romney also puts a huge emphasis on natural gas, which I agree is our bridge to the future.

What we need is the President to quit investing in technologies that are not proven and instead force the EPA to rule, one way or the other, on fracking, pipelines and deep-water drilling immediately and stop waiting until it is more politically expedient (i.e. after the election).

We have no job creation event on the horizon, but an energy plan could put these people to work who had left manufacturing (after manufacturing declined) for housing, only to see that bubble burst with nothing replace it.

We also need to invest in alternative energy that actually works. These alternative energies need infrastructure -- if we are to invest we should invest in the energy grid that can handle renewables and then let private enterprise build on these electric highways.

After all, when farm-to-market roads and the interstates were first built, they opened up commerce by creating the infrastructure. The government didn?t have to build trucking companies, but rather let private enterprise succeed and fail on the infrastructure it had built.

Government has a role -- not on the winners and losers side but rather the infrastructure side and on the policy side of energy policy as to whether to allow fracking, pipelines and drilling. ?And, if a loan guarantee is made, make it only for viable business and technology, as there is a time when the government is the lender of last resort.

I also believe we have to reevaluate our goals of foreign oil; we get over a third of our imported oil from Mexico and Canada. Why would we want our neighbors and partners selling oil to others? ?

As to the future, cellulosic ethanol may be like nuclear fusion -- 10 years away and always will be. However, if the enzyme is ever broken down this fuel is the game changer we have heard it is.

Sodium-cooled fast reactors and space-based solar energy may be the future, and this is where we need a ?Manhattan project?. Tell our NASA scientists you will let them go to Pluto, Mars or build Newt Gingrich a house on the moon, if they first figure these things out.

Before we get to that, a bridge to the future is the establishment of an energy policy and joining the rest of the developed world. Getting off of foreign oil is a possibility, but it won?t happen by chance. We need a plan.

Will it expense more fees to retrieve these backups, if provided? How many times for the duration of a week, month or year are files backed up?

Realizing somewhat bit about associated net hosting topics ahead of approaching customer support enables you to get the most out of the questions. Inside the end, using the help of a reliable customer service rep with fantastic intentions, you could or might not choose a specific internet hosting business for your business.
