ScienceOnline2013 - be a part of the program!

As the ScienceOnline world is growing, we have been busily preparing for ScienceOnline2013, our flagship meeting in Raleigh NC (January 31 ? February 2, 2013) for a few months now. The organizing wiki was set up while ScienceOnline2012 was still in session, and it?s time to start putting together the program.

There are already many good ideas on the Program Suggestions page of the wiki. If you intend to come to the event and you want to do something there ? moderate a session, present a brief demo, etc., volunteer by editing that page and adding your ideas there.

How is the program made? Read this account for hints.

We will close the Program Suggestions page on July 1st, so hurry up.

As we are closing the wiki unusually early this year, we will also leave a couple of time-slots in the program for topics that arise later, perhaps even for topics decided during the meeting itself. Stay tuned.

Judge OKs federal seizure of dino skeleton

One of the more unusual arrest warrants in U.S. history was issued Tuesday when a federal judge authorized the Department of Homeland Security to seize a dinosaur from an art storage company. There's no need for handcuffs, though. It's been dead for 70 million years.

U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel signed the warrant after finding there was "probable cause to believe" that the nearly complete Tyrannosaurus bataar skeleton is subject to forfeiture under U.S. laws. The U.S. filed a lawsuit against the skeletal property a day earlier, seeking to seize it for an eventual return to Mongolia.

It is typical in government seizure cases for the object to be seized to be named as a defendant. But it's not so common for an object to have an alias, in this instance "One Tyrannosaurus Bataar Skeleton" is also known as "LOT 49315 listed on Page 92 of The Heritage Auctions May 20, 2012 Natural History Auction Catalog."

The 8-foot-tall, 24-foot-long skeleton was described in the catalog as being "a stupendous, museum-quality specimen of one of the most emblematic dinosaurs ever to have stalked this Earth." It is currently held at a Cadogan Tate Fine Art property in Queens. A message left with the company Tuesday was not immediately returned.

The lawsuit said the Tyrannosaurus bataar skeleton was brought in March 2010 from Great Britain to Gainesville, Fla., with erroneous claims that it had originated in Great Britain and was worth only $15,000. It sold at auction on May 20 for more than $1 million, though the sale was contingent upon the outcome of court proceedings.

Jim Halperin, co-founder of Heritage Auctions, the dinosaur's Dallas-based custodian, has said a consignor bought the fossils in good faith and spent a year and considerable expense restoring them.

Halperin said Tuesday about the judge's order, "We have cooperated in the investigation process for paleontologists to expeditiously examine the skeleton, and we will continue to cooperate with authorities in an ongoing effort to reach a fair and just resolution to this matter."

Federal authorities say five experts viewed the remains on June 5, agreeing unanimously that the skeleton was a Tyrannosaurus bataar and almost certainly originated in the Nemegt Basin in Mongolia.

Tyrannosaurus bataars were first discovered in 1946 during a joint Soviet-Mongolian expedition to the Gobi Desert in the Mongolian Omnogovi Province. Since 1924, Mongolia has enacted laws declaring fossils to be the property of the government of Mongolia and criminalizing their export from the country.

Fed moves to juice US economy, but Wall Street wanted a jolt

The US central bank said Wednesday it will act to keep long-term borrowing costs low, to help stimulate the economy amid a weakening forecast. The Fed shaved 0.5 percent off its outlook for GDP growth this year.

In yet another effort to boost the US economy, the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee has decided to keep pushing down long-term interest rates, which could help people searching for a mortgage or corporations looking to do long-term financing.

However, the Fed's actions, termed Operation Twist because it involves the central bank selling short-term US treasuries and buying an equal amount of long-term bonds, disappointed?those on Wall Street who had hoped to see more aggressive steps to stimulate the economy.

?I think there was a slight disappointment,? says Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co. in Lake Oswego, Ore. ?There was a little bit of anticipation [that] the Fed would hint at the timing of some kind of additional easing or economic stimulus.?

Wall Street was also somewhat disappointed, says Mr. Dickson, to hear the central bank's forecast for the economy: modest weakening and little pickup in hiring. And, in an indication that the Fed expects the economy to be in slow motion no matter who is elected president in November, the Fed says it will keep short-term interest rates low through the end of 2014.

In a press conference Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke called the central bank?s new steps ?substantive,? and said the Fed is ?prepared to do what is necessary to provide support for the economy.?

Mr. Bernanke indicated that the Fed could move interest rates still lower. Short-term interest rates are almost zero. The 10-year Treasury bill is about 1.46 percent, and the yield on the 30-year Treasury bond is about 2.72 percent. Reflecting these low interest rates, mortgage rates are at close to record lows ? 3.63 percent for a 30-year fixed loan.

The Fed?s actions might do more than lower borrowing costs for people seeking mortgages or loans, Bernanke added. By buying securities from banks, the Fed might induce investors (such as banks) to buy corporate bonds, which would provide a better return, he said. Or, a bank may opt to make a loan instead of reinvesting the money in US Treasury securities.

Bernanke also indicated that some serious head winds are working against the nation?s central bank, such as the debt crisis in Europe, which has already driven some European nations into recession. This adversely affects US trade with Europe and has pushed down US stock prices.

In addition, the US housing recovery is not robust enough to help the general economy, Bernanke said. With home prices still falling in some places, spending is constrained because many Americans seeing their homes lose value feel poorer.

Finally, the Fed chairman noted that federal, state, and local governments continue to slow spending or reduce workforces.

?With all these headwinds, the Fed lowered its forecast for GDP growth by 0.5 percent for this year, 0.3 percent for 2013, and 0.1 percent for 2014. It also said it expected the unemployment rate would remain slightly higher than previously expected. ?Our sense is that people are finding jobs but not at the rate we would like to see,? Bernanke said.?

Bernanke refused to step into the dispute in Congress over the budget and the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts. But he did observe that the dispute, if unresolved, could induce companies with government contracts to start laying off workers as the end of the year approaches.

?But it?s most important that Congress get the policy right,? he said. ?Do no harm.??Any short-term fix, he said, might be a ?negative.?

Independent Fed watchers say the Fed?s actions on Wednesday are meant to be more of a psychological boost than a practical one. ?They have to show [that] the Fed still has ammunition,? says Sung Won Sohn, a professor of finance at California State University, Channel Islands. ?They are pretty much the only game in town.?

Bernanke reinforced that view, saying the Fed does not accept suggestions that it has no more ammunition. ?Our tools can still help us return to a more normal situation,? he said. ?That being said, any other help to make the economy stronger is welcome,? he said, referring to fiscal policy.

However, Fed watcher and economist Bob Brusca, of Fact & Opinion Economics in New York, says the Fed?s actions are cautious. ?It shows he doesn?t have any magic bullets, no new wisdom to impart,? says Mr. Brusca. ?That is where we are.?

LG unveils 'Quick Voice' in Korea to take on Siri and S-Voice

LG Quick Voice

With Apple having Siri and Samsung having S-Voice, we were kind of wondering if any other other manufacturers were going to join this voice driven assistant party. As it turns out, LG is willing to take a run at it having now unveiled Quick Voice as they're calling it in Korea. LG's Quick Voice (from what we can tell so far) will provide you with all that you would expect from a voice recognition system. Meaning it can launch searches, schedule appointments, bring up apps, make calls and even tell you what the date is. Right now, LG has noted it will be coming to their Optimus line of devices by end of June through July through a software update. At this time, there is no mention of a U.S. release date but it seems likely that LG would want to roll it out in as many places as possible eventually.

Jack Osbourne reveals he has multiple sclerosis

Tingling in his extremities and a 60 percent loss of sight in one eye led reality star and new dad Jack Osbourne, 26, son of Sharon and Ozzy, to discover he has multiple sclerosis. Kate Coyne of People magazine and Dr. Nancy Snyderman talk about the diagnosis.

By Piya Sinha-Roy, Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Reality television star Jack Osbourne, son of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and "America's Got Talent" judge Sharon Osbourne, has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, celebrity magazine People reported on Sunday.

Osbourne, 26, who welcomed daughter Pearl with his fianc?e, Lisa Stelly, in April, was given the news of his diagnosis two weeks after his daughter's birth.

"I was just angry and frustrated and kept thinking, 'Why now?'" Osbourne told People. "I've got a family and that's what's supposed to be the most important thing."

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system -- the brain and spinal cord -- and can affect muscle control, strength, vision, balance, thinking and feeling.

Osbourne, the youngest of Ozzy and Sharon's three children, shot to fame as the rebellious teenager alongside his sister Kelly in the MTV reality TV show "The Osbournes" in 2002, a fly-on-the-wall series following Ozzy and his family on their day-to-day lives.

The young star, who has been in rehab for drug abuse in the past, cleaned up his act and starred in his own show in 2005, "Jack Osbourne: Adrenaline Junkie," which saw Osbourne undertaking various extreme sports around the world.
