President Obama?s second inaugural speech, highly anticipated at a time of great partisan polarization, has entered history. And it is likely to be remembered more as a call to action for the president?s agenda than a call to national unity.

Still, Mr. Obama began his 15-minute address Monday with an emphasis on America?s founding document, the Constitution, and the collective strength it lends a nation that values its exceptional status in the world.

?America?s possibilities are limitless, for we possess all the qualities that this world without boundaries demands: youth and drive; diversity and openness; an endless capacity for risk and a gift for reinvention,? Obama said, addressing the crowded National Mall and TV viewers around the nation and world.

?My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it ? so long as we seize it together.?

But in a possible preview of the State of the Union address that the reelected and thus emboldened president will deliver on Feb. 12, Obama made pointed references to a second-term policy agenda that is sure to raise hackles among his political opponents. He issued a call to action on climate change, women?s rights, immigration, voting rights, gay rights, and gun control.

And he couched it all in the first three words of the US Constitution?s preamble, using ?We the People? as a refrain.

?We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths ? that all of us are created equal ? is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth,? Obama said.

In referring to Seneca Falls, Selma, and Stonewall, the president was referring to seminal places in the fight for women?s rights, civil rights, and gay rights. And he finished with a paean to a forebear of special significance to America?s first black president, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the slain civil rights leader for whom Jan. 21, 2013, is a federal holiday in honor of his birthday.

Immediately after Obama finished his address, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R) of Kentucky issued a statement, congratulating the president on his second inauguration ? and making a pitch for the agenda item that tops the Republicans? wish list.

Greek statistics head faces charges over revision

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek prosecutors are recommending charges be brought against the head of the statistics agency and two other employees for allegedly inflating the country's 2009 deficit.

The accusation stems from a 2010 revision which showed the deficit at 15.4 percent of the country's annual gross domestic product instead of 13.6 percent.

The revision suggested Greece's financial predicament was worse than had been thought. Greece received an international bailout in May 2010, but opposition was mounting against the spending cuts and tax increases demanded by creditors.

In 2011, a former statistics agency board member alleged the figure had been inflated to justify the austerity. Officials denied the allegation and said the revisions had been done according to European guidelines.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

"Jekyll & Hyde" musical heading back to Broadway in April

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Jekyll & Hyde" will bring those dueling personalities back to Broadway in April for a 13-week limited run.

Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse's musical version of Robert Louis Stevenson's macabre tale enjoys a rabid fan base, but was critically panned when it opened on Broadway in 1997. It ran for more than 1,500 performances, yet still lost money.

Thanks to several tours and the cast album, enthusiasm for the bodice-ripping musical has intensified. Last weekend, news broke via the New York Times that Phoenix Pictures CEO Mike Medavoy and RP Media head and former talent agent Rick Nicita have bought the film rights to the musical. They hope to have "Jekyll and Hyde" on the big screen within two years.

In the meantime, however, devotees of the musical can get their fix when the revival of the show swings back onto the Great White Way. The show will begin previews on April 5 and open on April 18 at the Marquis Theatre, where it will replace "Evita." It had originally been scheduled to play at Richard Rodgers Theatre.

The production, which has been touring the country since October, stars former "American Idol" contestant and Tony Award nominee Constantine Maroulis ("Rock of Ages") as the titular doctor and R&B star Deborah Cox as the prostitute, Lucy. Jeff Calhoun ("Newsies") is directing and choreographing the show.

Nederlander Presentations, Independent Presenters Network, Chunsoo Shin, Luigi Caiola and Stewart F. Lane/Bonnie Comley are producing.

Suspicious Los Angeles hotel fire injures 14 people

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - At least 14 people were injured, three of them critically, in a suspicious pre-dawn fire at a residential hotel in Los Angeles that is being investigated as "criminal in nature," city fire officials said on Tuesday.

Two of the critically hurt patients were in "grave condition," one with severe burns and another with respiratory injuries, while the third suffered a severe fracture when she jumped from the upper floor of the two-story building, officials said.

Other residents of the hotel, which operates as a low-rent apartment house for the poor, had threatened to jump as flames closed in, but firefighters managed to raise ladders and rescue the remaining occupants trapped on the second floor, the fire department said in a statement.

Fourteen people were treated at the scene for injuries and 12 of those were sent on to the hospital, including the critical patients, fire officials said.

Among those taken to the hospital was a police officer who suffered smoke inhalation trying to get people out of the building, the fire department statement said.

The blaze erupted before dawn in a 90-year-old hotel in the city's San Pedro district. The flames originated in a first-floor unit and quickly spread through much of the building, leaving half of the 14 units damaged, fire officials said.

No details were immediately available about how the fire started, but Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Jaime Moore said the blaze "is being investigated as criminal in nature."

State Dept.: 1 American dead in Algerian standoff

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One American worker at a natural gas complex in Algeria has been found dead, U.S. officials said Friday as the Obama administration sought to secure the release of Americans still being held by militants on the third day of the hostage standoff in the Sahara.

How Frederick Buttaccio, a Texas resident, died was not noted in a statement from State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. A spokesman for the Buttaccio family in the Houston suburb of Katy, Texas, declined to comment.

"We express our deepest condolences to his family and friends," Nuland said. "Out of respect for the family's privacy, we have no further comment."

It was not immediately clear whether Buttaccio was the only American killed in the hostage standoff.

U.S. officials told The Associated Press that Buttaccio's remains were recovered Friday. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she spoke by telephone with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal to get an update on Americans and others in danger at the sprawling Ain Amenas refinery 800 miles south of Algiers. She said the "utmost care must be taken to preserve innocent life."

Clinton talked to reporters after the Obama administration confirmed that Americans were still being held hostage, even as some U.S. citizens were being flown out of the country for recovery in Europe. The Algerian state news agency reported that 12 hostages had been killed since Wednesday's start of an Algerian rescue operation, and world leaders steadily increased their criticism of the North African country's handling of the attack.

Clinton, however, defended Algeria's action. "Let's not forget: This is an act of terror," she told reporters in Washington. "The perpetrators are the terrorists. They are the ones who have assaulted this facility, have taken hostage Algerians and others from around the world as they were going about their daily business."

Earlier Friday, Algeria's state news service reported that nearly 100 of the 132 foreign workers kidnapped by Islamic militants were free. That number of hostages at the remote desert facility was significantly higher than any previous report, but questions remained about the fate of more than 30 other foreign energy workers.

BP evacuated one American, along with other foreign workers, to Mallorca, Spain, and then to London. And an American official said a U.S. military C-130 flew a group of people, including some lightly wounded or injured, from Algiers to a U.S. facility in Europe on Friday. The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the matter and requested anonymity.

In London, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met with British Prime Minister David Cameron at No. 10 Downing St. to assess their governments' understandings of the situation. At King's College, Panetta said the U.S. is "working around the clock to ensure the safe return of our citizens" and that terrorists should be on notice they will find no sanctuary in Algeria or North Africa.

The White House said President Barack Obama was being briefed Friday by his national security team. His top aides were in touch with Algerian officials as well as BP's security office in London. BP jointly operates the natural gas plant.

U.S. officials have refused to confirm the number of Americans still captive or unaccounted for because they say that might compromise their safety.

The desert siege began Wednesday when the militants attempted to hijack two buses at the plant, were repelled, and then seized the gas refinery. They said the attack was retaliation for France's recent military intervention against Islamist rebels in neighboring Mali, but security experts argue it must have taken weeks of planning to hit the remote site.

Since then, Algeria's government has kept a tight grip on information about the siege.

Clinton stressed that American officials would stay in close contact with their Algerian counterparts. Sellal, she said, made clear that the Algerian operation against the militants "was still ongoing, that the situation remained fluid, that the hostages remain in danger in a number of instances."

Speaking beside Japan's new foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, Clinton said the crisis underscored the threat posed by extremists in North Africa, where al-Qaida-linked militants have seized control of half of Mali and plunged the country into civil war. She vowed to enhance U.S. work with Algeria and other countries in the region to combat terrorists even after the hostage situation ends.

"It is absolutely essential that as we work to resolve this particular terrible situation, we continue to broaden and deepen our counterterrorism cooperation," Clinton said. "We will not rest until we do as much as we can ... to restore security to this vital region, and to bring those who would terrorize and kill innocent people to justice."
