Several candidates have been floated for the position of finance minister, left vacant after Pranab Mukherjee retired Tuesday to run for president. Included among the possible candidates are Salman Khurshid, Jairam Ramesh and Anand Sharma.
So far only Mr. Ramesh, the current minister of rural development, has publicly ?applied? for the position, presenting a list of changes he would make if he got to the job in a letter he submitted to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul ? which mysteriously found its way to the front page of the Indian Express on Wednesday.
Mr. Ramesh?s suggestions include a special tax on diesel fuel, a quick decision on foreign direct investment in retail and aviation and quick clarification of the hugely unpopular retroactive tax proposal.
In the spirit of Mr. Ramesh, we invite India Ink readers to submit their ?applications? for the finance minister position in the comments below. Please offer your top three to five suggestions for getting the Indian economy back on track and we?ll pick a winner on Friday. He or she will receive a copy of Mr. Mukherjee?s book ?Challenges Before the Nation,? although we can?t guarantee any Finance Ministry nominations.
