Plane hijacking foiled in restive western China

(AP) ? Passengers and crew foiled a hijacking attempt by six people on a plane in China's restive far-western Xinjiang region Friday, a regional airline and state media said.

The attempt was made just after the plane took off from Hotan in southern Xinjiang for the regional capital of Urumqi and the six suspects were detained after the plane returned safely, the Tianshan regional government's news portal said.

Tianjin Airlines said on its website that the plane returned to Hotan 22 minutes after takeoff.

Tianshan's report did not give further details, such as how the hijacking was foiled, how many passengers were on the plane or what was known about the suspects' motive or ethnicity.

Hotan has been the scene of recent clashes between ethnic Uighurs (pronounced WEE'-gurs) and authorities. The Uighurs say they resent government controls on their religion and culture.

The government says China faces an organized terrorist threat from radical Muslim groups in the region and that it has invested heavily to raise living standards in Xinjiang.

The phone listed for Hotan police rang unanswered Friday. A man who identified himself as a police officer and gave only his family name Wang at Xinjiang Department of Public Security said no more information on the hijacking attempt was available.

In 2008, state media reported that a Uighur woman made an unsuccessful attempt to hijack a passenger plane flying to Beijing from Urumqi.

In general, threats to civil aviation in China are believed to be rare.

Is Baltic Sea 'sunken UFO' a scam?

The ocean explorers who discovered a huge, UFO-shape object on the floor of the Baltic Sea last year are having a heck of a time figuring out what it is.

A suspiciously hard time, some would say.

The Swedish divers, who call themselves the Ocean X Team, claim the object is giving off electrical interference that keeps foiling their attempts to investigate it. "Anything electric out there ? and the satellite phone as well ? stopped working when we were above the object," said diver Stefan Hoberborn in an Ocean X press release. "And then we got away about 200 meters and it turned on again, and when we got back over the object it didn't work."

As a result, there is still only one sonar image in existence of the 200-foot-wide (60-meter-wide) object, which UFO believers say is a crashed flying saucer. According to experts in remote imaging and geology, however, that image is "lacking in resolution, detail and quantification," is riddled with "numerous processing artifacts" and looks like a spaceship only because the Ocean X team drew a Millennium Falcon-shape outline around it. Instead, the experts said, what the image shows is probably a roughly circular rock formation called a pillow basalt ? rare, but very much of this world. [ Gallery: Images of 'Sunken UFO' ]

The alleged inability of the Ocean X team to provide more details of its seafloor " UFO " is only adding to the object's allure, judging by the upsurge of media coverage. But is the whole thing a scam?

Peter Lindberg, head of the Ocean X Team, either has let his imagination run wild or has an ulterior motive, according to Jonathon Hill, a researcher at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, who analyzes images of planetary surface features taken during NASA's Mars missions.

"Whenever people make extraordinary claims, it's always a good idea to consider for a moment whether they are personally benefiting from the claim or if it's a truly objective observation," Hill told Life's Little Mysteries.

"In this case, the team clearly has a lot to gain from an extraordinary claim," he said. "Mr. Lindberg is already making plans to take 'wealthy tourists' down in his submarine to view the object. If he had used a rock hammer to break off a small piece of the object, a geologist could have determined whether it was a pillow basalt in a few minutes. But if it turned out to be a pillow basalt and not a 'mysterious UFO-like object', Mr. Lindberg wouldn't have much of a business plan, would he?"

Report: Ex-PSU president OK'd not reporting abuse

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? A news organization says it has seen emails showing Penn State's former president Graham Spanier agreed not to take allegations of sex abuse against ex-assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky to authorities but worried university officials would be "vulnerable" for failing to report it.

CNN says the emails, first reported by NBC, followed a graduate assistant's 2001 report of seeing Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in a team locker room shower.

The emails show athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz intended to report the allegation, then reconsidered. Spanier responded that he was "supportive" of their plan, but he worried they might "become vulnerable for not having reported it."

Sandusky was convicted this month of 45 counts of sexually abusing 10 boys. The scandal led to the ouster of Spanier and revered coach Joe Paterno and charges against Curley and Schultz, who are accused of perjury for their grand jury testimony and failing to properly report suspected child abuse. Spanier hasn't been charged.

The CNN report cites an email from Schultz to Curley on Feb. 26, 2001, 16 days after graduate assistant Mike McQueary told veteran coach Joe Paterno about the shower assault. Schultz suggests bringing the allegation to the attention of Sandusky, Sandusky's charity and the Department of Welfare, which investigates suspected child abuse, according to the report.

But the next night, Curley sent an email to Spanier, saying that after thinking about it more and talking to Paterno, he was "uncomfortable" with that plan and wanted to work with Sandusky before contacting authorities, the report said.

If Sandusky is cooperative, Curley's email said, "we would work with him. .... If not, we do not have a choice and will inform the two groups," according to the report.

Spanier wrote back and agreed with that approach, calling it "humane and a reasonable way to proceed," according to the report. But he also worried about the consequences.

"The only downside for us is if message isn't 'heard' and acted upon and we then become vulnerable for not having reported it, but that can be assessed down the road," the email said, according to CNN.

Spanier's attorney didn't immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Saturday.

Schultz and Curley's lawyers on Saturday echoed recent comments by Gov. Tom Corbett about the need for a solid case before charging Sandusky. Corbett began the investigation in 2009 when he was attorney general.

"For Curley, Schultz, Spanier and Paterno, the responsible and 'humane' thing to do was, like Governor Corbett, to carefully and responsibly assess the best way to handle vague, but troubling allegations," the lawyers said. "Faced with tough situations, good people try to do their best to make the right decisions."

Paterno, ousted by the school's board of trustees for what was called his "failure of leadership" surrounding allegations against Sandusky, died of lung cancer in January. After Sandusky's arrest, Paterno said through a spokesman that he reported the allegation to the head of his department and "that was the last time the matter was brought to my attention until this investigation and I assumed that the men I referred it to handled the matter appropriately."

Schultz, 62, and Curley, 58, deny the allegations and have asked a judge to dismiss the charges. A status conference for their case is scheduled for July 11.

Spanier sued Penn State in May to try to get copies of his email traffic from 1998 to 2004, citing the pending investigation being conducted on the university by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Two weeks ago, lawyers for Penn State asked a judge to throw out the lawsuit and said the attorney general's office, which is prosecuting Curley and Schultz, had asked them not to provide Spanier with the emails.

UT College of Veterinary Medicine treats lion for cancer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- He's the king of the jungle, but one lion isn't fighting animals, he's fighting a disease. Tsavo has cancer and it's causing him a lot of pain. But the UT College of Veterinary Medicine is trying to make him a little more comfortable.

"We actually see a lion here in the clinic once a week," says Dr. Nathan Lee, a Radiation Oncologist.

Two large cats came Thursday morning from Tiger Haven in Roane County. Sohan the tiger is getting checkups on a heart condition. But Tsavo's procedure is the main event.

"It is a very unique case. It's unique that the Melanoma he has not usual in cats. Never mind a lion. We think this is the first report case of this kind of melanoma in a lion," says Lee.

The 12 year old, 350 pound cat has skin cancer, a tumor on his upper lip.

"Melanomas occurs in domestic cats, especially white ones on the ears. And is probably solar induced. In Tsalvo we're not really sure how it cropped up. It's not in the right location for sun induced tumor," says Dr. Ed Ramsey, a Professor of Veterinary Medicine.

Debbie Wilkins of Tiger Haven says, "When we take them in, we promise to give them the best life we can, and if we can let them live a happy a life, we do. We made that promise when we took them, and we keep our word to them."

The team uses a tranquilizer dart to put Tsavo to sleep. Under heavy sedation, they move the lion from a rolling cage onto a gurney to prep him for treatment.

"Under the beam itself, it's only a couple of minutes. So actually 80 percent of time is involved in getting him to go to sleep and transporting him and bringing him back out," says Ramsey.

The radiation appears to be working, melting the tumor.

"The first treatment it was 10 by 12 centimeters, [Thursday] it is 6.5 by 4 centimeters, so pretty impressive response," says Lee.

Fix It Yourself With These Home Improvement Tips | Window ...

Instead of investing in all new furniture, you may consider having your current furniture repaired and reupholstered by a professional. Many times older furniture is higher quality and with some affordable repairs and refurbishing you will have better furniture for less money than when you invest in low-price new furniture.

You need to lay down drop clothes or old sheets when you are going to be painting a room. Many people do not realize how difficult it can be to get up paint once it has splattered onto a carpet or hard wood floor. Laying down covering is a quick and easy fix that can make a big difference.

Before making renovations on your home, you should first think about the health of your home and how you can improve it. you should scan your house and figure out what you would like to get and what you actually need to get. Determining these things can help you figure out what you should do next.

If you?re tired of running out of hot water, consider getting a tankless water heater. Tankless heaters give you hot water only as you need it, without having to have a holding tank. By only heating the water you?ll immediately use, you can also save money on energy. They also take up much less room than traditional tank heaters.

When you set up your vanity lights in your bathroom, pay close attention to the shadows they cast. you don?t want to have your vanity lights set up in such a way that it is difficult to see what you are doing or in such a way that you appear to be veiled in shadows when you look in the mirror. your vanity lights should be positioned in a way that provides a clear, usable working light.

Get double-glazed windows, or even triple-glazed windows fitted to your house. These windows can decrease your annual energy bills by hundreds of dollars, as they are great insulators. They are also more difficult to smash, so you home is less likely to be broken into. Additionally, they can significantly increase the value of your home.

Replacing your old windows is a great home improvement project, but do not get fooled into thinking that it is going to be a huge energy savings. the cost of replacing your old single hung windows with new energy efficient double pane windows is far greater than any savings on your utility bill could ever bring. so do not use that as a factor when determining if this is a home improvement project that you want to start.

If you have a kitchen and family room that run together, consider adding a breakfast bar. a breakfast bar will allow each room to have individuality and you will not have to compromise the space. An over-sized breakfast bar that includes chairs can be purchased for less than 1,000 dollars.

Replace doorknobs and drawer knobs. These small changes can perk up furniture that you already have and are less expensive than buying a new door or a new set of drawers. Doorknobs and drawer knobs can be bought in a variety of styles and colors, so it?s easy to add a little pizazz with just a little bit of money.

If you have a home improvement project that you cannot do alone and you must hire someone to help, make sure the person you employ has proper insurance coverage. you definitely do not want to be liable for any injuries or medical problems which occur to someone working on your property, since the cost of medical and workman?s compensation bills can be huge.

To really take the hassle out of home improvement, if you have young ones at home, have your kids help with some of the projects. If they do a project from start to finish with minimal supervision or assistance, they may take ownership of their work. this may free you of the responsibility of cleaning and maintenance of it. another benefit of using your children is that it will save you a lot of money.

Be careful to what degree you personalize your home improvement projects. What appeals to you now may not appeal to potential buyers down the road. the more specialized and substantial your project is, the smaller return on investment you can expect to receive when you sell your home in the future.

If you have the available financial resources, why wait another day to get started on your next home improvement or landscaping project? Regardless of the scope and scale of the new project, the useful information found in this article will most certainly make the process far more simple and stress-free.

A Room of One's Own: How to Be More Creative @ Shirley Hershey ...

a clean well-lighted space

It?s Wednesday, June, 27, 2012. 8 a.m.

Time to go to the office.

Oh wait, I am at the office! I have finally arrived at a place I have fantasized about ? a room of my own for writing ? and freedom from the 9-5 job world. Much as I loved having a career, I often coveted the life I imagined writers to have. ?Now is the first time in my life that I get to see how the fantasy matches up with the reality.

Will words come?

In her famous extended essay on creativity and the woman writer, ?A Room of One?s Own,? Virginia Woolf asserted that until women have had enough money (500 pounds) and space (a room with a lock on the door), over a long enough time (one hundred years), they would not be able to produce great literature to match their male peers. The dominant literary genre of her time was the novel, and her focus was on the woman novelist.

Woolf herself, ironically, had in fact inherited 500 pounds a year, and, presumably, she had a room of her own. She wrote beautifully yet walked into the River Ouse with a large stone in her pocket. She struggled with her demons as long as she could in order to become a mother to other women writers. She herself said it best:

?A woman writing thinks back through her mothers.??Virginia Woolf (Tweet Me)

The Anxiety of Influence

Woolf wrote to decry the absence of mothering in the literary tradition, an insight likely heightened by the fact that her biological mother died when she was just thirteen years old. She knew the feeling of being a motherless child, just one of the psychological burdens of the writer.

Harold Bloom, speaking about the male literary tradition, named another burden: the anxiety of influence.

Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar challenged Bloom?s oedipal theory for its male orientation and renamed it to fit what they saw as the universal dilemma of the woman writer, still struggling for legitimacy within the tradition. They named their theory the anxiety of authorship.

Does it help a woman writer that she knows these things as she gazes out her window?

a wondow to memory and mountains

Not really.

Writers will always feel anxiety. If they feel motherless, they are lonely. If they have mothers as magnificent as Virginia Woolf, they feel intimidated.

So what?s a writer to do?

Get in the chair and write!

Many of us crave the conditions ideal for writing. Then, when they arrive, we fear that we don?t deserve them or lack the gifts to take full advantage of them. It seems the Fates can get us any way we turn.

So let?s not turn, shall we? In the space below, please share one idea that helps inspire you to action rather than paralysis, whether you are a writer, a parent, another kind of artist, or just an ordinary human being trying to live a creative life. We want to know your secrets!

Astronomers use an old trick to open new window on extrasolar planets

Two teams of astronomers used a technique for finding extrasolar planets to directly measure one such planet. The approach could allow the study of more exoplanets' atmospheres than ever before.

By Pete Spotts / June 27, 2012

A method astronomers have used for nearly 20 years to indirectly find planets orbiting other stars has for the first time been used to take the direct measure of an extrasolar planet itself.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The approach not only yields precise estimates of a planet's mass, a critical piece of information that can help determine a planet's bulk composition. It also can reveal its orbital inclination. And perhaps most important, it could allow astronomers to study atmospheres of more extrasolar planets than ever before.

The reason: The technique doesn't require a star to backlight a planet's atmosphere as the planet passes in front of its star. Until now, this kind of backlighting, during what's known as a transit, has provided the only window astronomers have had on the make-up of an extrasolar planet's atmosphere. And the number of transiting planets so far is only about one-third the number of planets discovered by two international teams of astronomers who used this approach and whose findings are published this month.

The orb the teams observed, known as tau Bootis b, was discovered in 1996 by a group led by astronomer Geoffrey Marcy at the University of California at Berkeley. It orbits a star nearly 51 light-years from Earth in the Northern-Hemisphere constellation Bootes.

Marcy's team found tau Bootis b via the slight wobble it imparted to its host star's spectrum as it orbits. As the planet swings around its star and its gravity tugs the star away from the viewer, it slides the star's bar-code-like chemical signature toward the red end of the spectrum. As the planet continues its orbit and tugs the star toward the viewer, the spectrum shifts toward the blue end. Over multiple orbits, the star's spectrum "wobbles" from blue to red and back.

The idea to use this approach to detect a planet directly is an old one, notes Simon Albrecht, an astronomer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., and a member of one of the two teams. His group was led by Matteo Brogi with the Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands. The other team was led by Florian Rodler, with the Institute of Space Science in Barcelona.

All it needed was the right combination of technology and a target close enough and bright enough to pursue. Tau Bootis b fit the latter requirement. For hardware, both teams used a new, exquisitely sensitive near-infrared spectrometer bolted to the back end of one of four eight-meter telescopes that make up the Very Large Telescope array. The facility, run by the European Southern Observatory, is located on a mountaintop in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.

Thoughts on Gay Marriage from a Straight Woman | Veracity Stew

Opponents of same-sex marriage are dropping like flies. Maybe it was the President coming out for marriage equality, or maybe it is just an idea whose time has come, but more and more Americans are moving toward approval of the idea of same-sex marriage.

As a ?straight? person, that both heartens and bothers me.

One of the chief advocates of California?s historic Proposition 8 has publicly and officially changed his position on same-sex marriage and now believes that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry as a matter of ?basic?fairness.? David Blankenhorn, who founded an organization called the?Institute for American Values, and a witness in 2010 on behalf of Protect Marriage, Prop. 8?s sponsoring group, wrote in a New York Times opinion piece:

?For me, the most important (thing) is the equal dignity of homosexual love. I don?t believe that opposite-sex and same-sex relationships are the same, but I do believe, with growing numbers of Americans, that the time for denigrating or stigmatizing same-sex relationships is over. Whatever one?s definition of marriage, legally recognizing gay and lesbian couples and their children is a victory for basic fairness.?

Blankenhorn?s change of position comes on the heels of ?a CNN/ORC poll released earlier this month which shows that 54 percent of Americans believe that marriages between gay and lesbian couples should be recognized as valid by law. The results of the survey were released the day after a federal appeals court in San Francisco refused to review the same same-sex marriage ruling Blankenhorn opposed and testified in support of previously. Proposition 8, was ruled unconstitutional by the courts, but a stay is in place until appeals are exhausted.

I?m heartened because it seems in a short time and with each new poll more Americans are ready to support the legality of gay marriage. I?m bothered because no person?s rights ? gay or straight ? should be the subject of anybody else?s approval or disapproval. By its very nature this overall debate, the various votes and the numerous polls give the majority the power and authority to determine what is ?normal.?

On the one hand, I understand the joy that accompanied President Obama?s and the NAACP?s endorsements of same-sex marriage as a civil right. On the other, I?m offended that in the 21st Century we feel we need anyone?s permission to accept a normal relationship as a normal relationship. A big part of me says if we just saw LGBT people as, say, people, we wouldn?t need to have this conversation. People marry other people, or not. It should be their choice. Why should one set of people get to determine that one person is more or less worthy than another?

I?m grateful for movement in the right direction but one of the things that has always bothered me about the same-sex marriage debate is that it perpetuates a sense of ?otherness? that lets us believe that it is okay to discriminate against gay people. A second thing that bothers me is any notion that the fight for marriage equality is an LGBT fight. It is not. Any time anyone with power attempts to exclude a portion of society based on pure prejudice it is an attack on us all and we must all join the fight against them.

There are ways we can recognize that we are different but still entitled to be treated equally. We may be seeing positive signs that we?re headed in that direction but we?re not there yet. Start by not waiting for permission to do the right thing.

Scam on Facebook steals debit card numbers

(WMC-TV) - My good friends at the Better Business Bureau and FraudAvengers are begging you. They're pleading with you.

Don't fall for a debit card discount offer on Facebook.

Both watchdog groups?have warned us about?an unsolicited offer on?Facebook pages. The offer:? 20 percent cash back if people link their debit cards to their Facebook pages.

I know, I know. Sounds insane, right?

The problem is there are perfectly sane people out there typing their debit card numbers on their Facebook profiles faster than you can say "identity theft," all for a fake 20 percent cut.

If you follow through, the BBB said you will launch a malware virus on your computer.

"The malware scam is particularly malicious because the fraudulent offers appear to come from trusted friends," said the BBB in its contribution to FraudAvengers.

BBB's and FraudAvengers' tips for avoiding Facebook scams:

  • Never install a game or an application that you?re not entirely sure is legitimate.
  • Be wary of posts from friends that use overtly promotional language.
  • Never click on Facebook posts or install applications that claim they will tell you which of your friends viewed your profile. It?s impossible to find out who is viewing your profile.
  • If you mistakenly install an application on Facebook, click the ?Home? icon in the top right-hand corner of the site, and go to ?Account Settings.? On the right-hand column of the page click on the icon that says ?Apps,? and uninstall the suspect application.

Mysterious Cdn at heart of Chinese cold murder case

Pamela Werner
Pamela Werner, 19, was found murdered in China in 1937. (Supplied)

Report an error

On a January morning in 1937, the body of a young Englishwoman is found in Peking.

Her murder - during the last days of Old China - was never solved.

But now, evidence uncovered by a dogged historian - following a path of detective-work cleared by the young girl's father -- may have finally made the case against those who butchered the schoolgirl.

And among the key figures is a rogue Canadian with blood on his knife.

When an old Chinese gentleman found the mutilated body of teenager Pamela Werner seventy-five years ago, it was early morning under Peking's ancient Fox Tower -- a place locals said spirits could steal your soul.

The remains of the schoolgirl -- a 19-year-old daughter of a British scholar -- rested uncomfortably at the edge of a shady part of town called the Badlands. There, opium dens and brothels were the real soul thieves.

In many ways, Pamela bridged the gap between colonial Peking and the hard underbelly of the ancient city.

The killing of the blond and grey-eyed foreigner -- an 'laowai' to locals -- was just another thing to fear.

Outside, Japanese forces were circling.

Life for everyone in Peking was changing fast.

Which meant answers to who killed Pamela -- crushed her skull, sliced at her legs and cut her heart and organs from her body -- would have to be found quickly.

The murder investigation to follow was unprecedented -- a joint taskforce led by a Chinese detective and a visiting British cop.

They combed through every line in her diary. They tried turning Peking upside down -- from the gilded homes of the westerners to the filthy alleys of the Badlands.

What they came away with -- as well as meddling by Chinese and British brass -- was a picture of a shy schoolgirl who was maturing into a confident woman.

But the face of her killer was never revealed, and the investigation ended -- which is just how British officials wanted it.

But at least one man wouldn't have it that way.

Pamela's father, ETC Werner, sanctioned his own investigation, and uncovered a possible conspiracy of prostitution and murder.

His theory was compelling, but it led nowhere officially.

Today, there is no direct bloodline back to Pamela.

But historian Paul French has gone back to take up her father's cause -- finding and dusting off Werner's files.

French's newly released book, Midnight in Peking: How the Murder of a Young Englishwoman Haunted the Last Days of Old China, names a respected ex-pat American dentist, Wentworth Prentice, and a shadowy Canadian named Pinfold, as leading suspects.

Pinfold had been brought in for questioning, after his landlady found a bloodstained dagger in his room. While he refused to answer questions, he was released after it was discovered he often went hunting -- including with dentist Prentice.

But the thought westerners could have been behind the murder didn't sit well with officials.

Pamela's father -- and author French -- suspects the young girl was invited to a party in a brothel, only to face a group of white men who attacked her.

She resisted. And died.

Little is known about the Canadian in that room.

He may have been a soldier on the run.

"It was also thought that he might have acted as a mercenary in China working for a northern warlord in Peking," French explains. "Either way he worked hard to stay under the radar."

While officials took the blood found in Pinfold's room seriously, science at the time couldn't match it Pamela.

"The fact was that there simply wasn't enough hard evidence to arrest him," says French.

"I'm not sure it matters that much who struck the fatal blow. All the men in that room that evening at the No.28 Chuanpan Hutong brothel were guilty by association."

No one knows what happened to Pinfold, though Prentice died in Peking after the war. So if they were guilty, they got away with it.

For the historian, who followed the path started by a mournful father, the end can only lead to one place beyond the Fox Tower.

"The justice for Pamela," French says, "is in remembrance."

This collaboration comes at an exciting moment as Speakerfile moves to showcase authors in the expanding market of conferences and events?many of which are co-hosted by librarians and retail booksellers.

?Author appearances drive book sales, therefore the publishing market is huge for Speakerfile. Philip Turner has a unique perspective on how this market is changing for authors and the entire publishing industry,? says?Peter Evans, CEO of Speakerfile. ?From our first meeting, Philip understood our vision for helping authors gain more visibility as speakers. He came recommended by the biggest players in the industry. Having Philip as a resource on the ground in the New York market will help us discover new publisher and author clients and serve them well.?

Over the past 25 years, Turner has held a number of senior positions with publishers in New York City, acquiring, editing, and publishing many notable titles. As Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Kodansha America and Kodansha Globe, he published the first paperback edition of Barack Obama?s DREAMS FROM MY FATHER: A Story of Race and Inheritance (1996). While Executive Editor and Editor-in-Chief with Carroll & Graf, Turner acquired, edited, and published THE POLITICS OF TRUTH: Inside the Lies that Led to War and Betrayed My Wife?s CIA Identity by Ambassador Joseph Wilson, a New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller (2004), and became in part the basis of the film ?Fair Game.? He also published the U.S. edition of the Canadian bestseller SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda by Lt. Gen. Rom?o Dallaire (2006), a Washington Post bestseller. Turner is a member of the PEN American Center, an associate member of the National Book Critics Circle, and a member of Your Expert Nation. Since 2009 he has operated Philip Turner Book Productions, an editorial and marketing consultancy. In 2011 he began curating and writing? The Great Gray Bridge,?a popular blog devoted to coverage of books, publishing, music, urban life, and current affairs.

?The response from the publishing market to Speakerfile has already been tremendous,? says Philip Turner. ?Speaking engagements have become increasingly important for authors to promote their work, yet meeting planners and conference organizers have lacked an effective way to discover and connect with the right speakers for their events. Some publishers have recognized this by starting their own in-house speakers bureaus. Speakerfile is not duplicating those efforts, and is not in competition with publishers. Instead, its ingenious software works like a matchmaking service to connect the right authors with the right events.?

The Speakerfile online marketplace offers individual accounts for authors and speakers, as well as corporate accounts for publishers, publicists, and organizations. Accounts are offered free of charge for event planners who are listing their event and searching for authors for speaking engagements, as well as for members of the media.

?I am confident the Speakerfile platform will help authors promote their work even in an increasingly crowded marketplace, providing the discoverability that I know all publishers and authors are seeking: an engine that will place authors in front of audiences and drive book sales,? says Turner. ?Speakerfile offers authors an engaging online presence that will more efficiently connect them to event organizers, and even members of the media, who are also invited to register on the platform free of charge.?

The Speakerfile online platform does not charge a commission for speaker placements; the platform generates revenue from premium speaker profiles and corporate speaker bureau software. The?Speakerfile signup?page provides more information on membership types and pricing.
