N.Y. Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles: Sunday Night Baseball Live Score, Analysis

The Baltimore Orioles (46-36) try for a three-game sweep over the New York Yankees (42-38) tonight on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball.?

The matchup features two teams that appear to be headed in separate directions.?The O's have pulled to 2.5 games behind the first-place Red Sox while the Yankees have fallen to 5.5 back.

Baltimore boasts one of the best lineups in baseball, led by first baseman Chris Davis, who has hit a MLB-leading 30 home runs (including two in the Orioles 11-3 win on Saturday night).?

The Yankees' offense simply has not been able to withstand an onslaught of injuries which has suffocated the team's bats. Recent slumps from Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay have merely exacerbated their offensive woes.?

Through Saturday, the Yankees have scored 86 runs in the month of June, worst in the AL. The Yankees' .225 average as a team in June is second-worst in MLB.

In fact, the Yankees' run differential of -14 is the worst of any team over the .500 mark. The Bronx Bombers lack the firepower to hang around in arguably the toughest division in baseball.

The Yankees have lost four straight and are in desperate need of a win tonight. Unfortunately for New York, the Orioles have won the past seven games in which starter Chris Tillman (9-2, 3.72 ERA) has taken the mound.

On the plus side, Robinson Cano is 8-of-16 lifetime against the right-handed Tillman. The Orioles also get back second baseman Brian Roberts, who has been out since early April with a hamstring injury.

The Yankees send Hiroki Kuroda (7-5, 2.77 ERA) to the mound hoping he can put a stop to the losing streak. ?

Bombs target soccer players, spectators in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bombs targeting soccer players and young men who had gathered to watch a match in Iraq killed seven people on Saturday.

A roadside bomb in a busy market killed another three people, bringing the death toll to 10, police and medics said.

The violence is part of a trend of increasing militant attacks since the start of the year, which claimed more than 1,000 lives in May alone, making it the deadliest month since the sectarian bloodletting of 2006-7.

In recent days, men playing in local soccer fixtures and watching matches have been the targets - after spates of attacks on both Sunni and Shi'ite mosques and the security forces.

The reason behind the attacks on soccer players and spectators is not clear.

Police and medics said the bomb was planted inside a coffee shop in central Baghdad and killed four young men who had gathered to watch an under 20s international match between Iraq and Chile on television.

Twin roadside bombs exploded near a soccer stadium, killing three players in Muqdadiya, 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the capital, and the blast in the market left a further three people dead in a town west of Baghdad, police said.

Earlier this week, twin blasts at a neighborhood football stadium killed five players and two blasts tore through cafes where scores of young men had gathered to watch another match, killing eight people.

Concerns that Iraq may lapse back into full-scale sectarian conflict have mounted in recent months amid tensions fuelled by the civil war in neighboring Syria, where mainly Sunni rebels are fighting to overthrow a leader backed by Shi'ite Iran.

Sunni insurgents including al Qaeda's Iraqi affiliate have been regaining ground, recruiting from the country's Sunni minority, which resents Shi'ite domination since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled former dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Microsoft is currently strutting its stuff on the brightly coloured stage at its Build 2013 developer conference ? and it?s kicked things off with a look at some shiny new features in Windows 8.1.

With Windows 8 coming in for some criticism from users who felt that Microsoft had changed too much, too soon, Windows 8.1 is a chance for the software giant to tease those who have yet to switch. And yes: the Start button is back.

Desk decorations are, in general, fairly boring. A framed photo of the family. A wilting fern. A dancing flower if you?re a bit ?zanier?. But a startup called Levavo lets you do something much more interesting: create a miniature statue of yourself.

Pay Levavo?s East London studio a visit and they will take a full body scan of your chosen pose (apparently this takes a second, similar to having a photo taken). Pretty much any pose is possible, and Levavo told us that soon it?ll be able to scan two people at once.

Prize-winning pianist caught between anger and ecstasy

By Barbara Lewis

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Competitions are for horses, not for artists was the verdict of the great Hungarian composer and pianist Bela Bartok.

And there is a part of Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg, declared winner on June 1 of one of the world's most prestigious and grueling music contests, that agrees.

He won Belgium's Queen Elisabeth Competition in spite of a memory lapse that froze him as he performed Mozart in the semi-finals. His mother and grandmother, both pianists, left the room where they were listening, convinced it was all over, as was Giltburg.

"What I most wanted to do was crawl away, but I knew I couldn't. It's a feeling of utter hopelessness," he told Reuters, relaxing at last over chocolate dessert in a Brussels brasserie.

After the performance, he forced himself to play back the recording and discovered, contrary to his expectations, he had not actually stopped.

His right hand had continued to play "something", he said. But the revelation, was that, after the blackout, he recovered, his playing improved, his muscles relaxed and Mozart flowed.

Still, he was incredulous that he was selected for the finals - and the next ordeal in the form of a week of confinement in Waterloo, near Brussels.

In the "Chapelle musicale" (literally musical chapel), built for the purpose, the 12 finalists, denied all access to the outside world, had to learn a fiendishly difficult new work by French composer Michel Petrossian, as well as rehearsing their chosen performance pieces - in Giltburg's case a Beethoven sonata and a Rachmaninov concerto.

To add to the hot-house atmosphere, in which everyone was acutely aware of everyone else's talent, Petrossian's piece was 16 minutes long, compared with the average of about 10 minutes for the surprise work handed to the contestants at this stage.

That meant 50 percent more highly complex music to learn.

'A BIT ANGRY'

Torn between anger and despair, Giltburg, who has just turned 29, said it was one of the toughest weeks of his life so far and the anger has not subsided.

"I'm a bit angry at the world for not having come up with another way of discovering talent other than competitions," he said.

He vows he would never be on a jury, making the kind of decision that determines someone's future, but at the same time he brims with gratitude for the judges who selected him - themselves performers aware that even superb pianists can forget a few notes.

Set up by Belgium's Queen Elisabeth, the Brussels-based contest is one of a handful of truly great springboards for a musician's career. On the strength of it, Giltburg has more than 80 concerts worldwide before the end of the year.

They include performances in Russia, where he was born, and Israel, where he has lived since his family emigrated there in 1990.

While the family was on the move, Giltburg briefly tried to learn the violin, but there was no affinity and he persuaded his reluctant mother, who thought there were enough pianists in the family, that she had to teach him. "She's still my harshest critic," he said.

He also studied with Israel's Arie Vardi and attended the Buchmann-Mehta Academy of Music, part of Tel Aviv University.

For the future, he said there will be no more competitions, only concert performances, which he loves.

"It's my main driver forward. There comes a point where you can't advance any more without performing before an audience. It's the real thing, which is un-simulate-able," he said.

In concerts, technical perfection takes second place to creating an atmosphere and communicating and Giltburg has a mission to reach beyond the typical classical audience.

He has a Facebook page and a blog to try to explain to the non-initiated classical music's power. "Music, as a creation of humanity, there's little I would place above it," he said. "I want to bring the same kind of feeling to everybody."

Reflections on Learning Success: Article: A Conceptual Framework ...

In the world of teaching and learning, many people talk about "active learning." However, this is something that seems to have been poorly defined, in the past. To help clarify what active learning actually is, my colleague Dr. Brian Belland and I recently published an article entitled A conceptual framework for organizing active learning experiences in biology instruction. In this article, we outline what we identify as some of the major themes of active learning, particularly in higher education biology courses. The active learning themes we identified include (1) Problem-solving, (2) Collaboration and Discussion, (3) Animations, and (4) Technology-enhanced Activities.

In the article, we describe these four themes and show how Merrill's First Principles of Instruction can be used as a framework for organizing them. To access the article, click here.

Imgur's Android App Officially Debuts, Content Creation Tools Coming Soon

imgur-androidImgur, the simple but popular photo-sharing site that's a favorite among Reddit's user base, is today "officially" launching its first mobile application. And Imgur, due to its unconventional ways, has gone?Android-first.?(Many of its users' images fail to pass through Apple's strict guidelines on content and copyright.) Of course, the most devoted?Imgurians?have already installed the new mobile app in its earlier beta format, which was tested in the wild. This is also why the Google Play Store sports a fair number of poor reviews - users had been reporting bugs and other issues with beta builds, and marking the app accordingly.

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

Vertu TI now available in red or blue limited editions, only 1,000 of each made

It's been almost half a year since Vertu launched its first-ever Android phone, the TI, and now the company's decided to throw in a couple of limited editions to lure the big spenders. As pictured above, the new Vertu TI Colours collection is wrapped in either "Sunset Red" or "Midnight Blue" calf leather, and only 1,000 units are made for each color. As per typical Vertu style, there's a unique number etched on the back to indicate which of the 1,000 units yours is.

The rest of this hand-crafted, matt grey titanium phone remains unchanged otherwise, namely its 3.7-inch tough sapphire screen, Android 4.0, 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 64GB storage plus an 8-megapixel camera. And of course, the phone still comes with the famed Vertu Concierge, a "100 percent independent" service that CEO Perry Oosting is very proud of. To join this exclusive club, you'll have to somehow fork out a whopping HK$90,000 or €8,900 (about US$11,700) -- just a tad more expensive than the TI Titanium Pure Black edition, but also more flamboyant. This author already spotted these new phones at Vertu's Hong Kong Airport store, and he's currently accepting donations.

A Typeface Designed To Thwart Spying Computers

If people are snooping on your textual communications and you don't like it, there are a couple of things you can do. You can try to block the prying eyes, you can stop saying things you don't want to be seen, or you can make your messages make no sense to the outside. The anti-authoritarian typeface ZXX is shooting for that last one.
