Boo! Are You Unintentionally Scaring Your ... - Search Engine Land

retargeting ad

Hey, you. Weren?t you just shopping for a clown costume?

Targeting in online marketing has gotten really good ? scary good, in fact. Think for a moment about the level of granularity that AdWords now provides SEMs.

If I wanted to, I could create a targeted campaign that only shows ads to people:

  • In San Mateo, CA
  • Using their iPhone
  • Using WiFi
  • On AT&T
  • Online between 7:00 and 7:15PM
  • Who have previously visited a specific page of my website
  • Who typed in the query ?Dracula costume?

With all that data, I could create ad text and landing pages that might make someone wonder if I?ve hacked into their device and stolen some of their personal files from their house.

But wait ? there?s more! I could also develop a remarketing campaign on Google Display Network to follow this poor consumer around the Web with increasingly more aggressive ads offering big discounts to come into my costume store (with remarketing, you can target not just on the page someone visited, but by how long it has been since they visited your site).

And, let?s not forget Facebook. Through the Facebook Ad Exchange (FBX), I can retarget my prey on Facebook, as well. And, if this individual has ever signed up for my email newsletter, I can also target him/her on Facebook through Custom Audiences, which is basically a mail merge between my email database and Facebook?s user list.

Finally, just to add a little more fuel to the fire, to increase my e-commerce sales, I might partner with a dynamic retargeting company like TellApart or Criteo to run display ads that show the customer images of the actual product he?s viewed on my site.

ad from retargeting

?

A couple of years ago, AdAge ran a column about retargeting titled The Pants That Stalked Me on the Web. The article was specifically about the author getting served Criteo retargeting ads one too many times. Today, that author might feel relieved if all he was seeing was Criteo ads.

Add up FBX, Custom Audiences, search retargeting, and the general advances in AdWords targeting, and today?s user can be (and probably often is) over-targeted to the point of annoyance.

The Road To Creepiness Is Paved With Good Intentions

Ironically, most marketers set up these targeting campaigns because they actually want to provide a better user experience for customers.

After all, serving ads to users only after you?ve determined interest in your business or a specific product is ? on its face ? better than just plastering the Internet with ads and hoping than one out of a thousand ends up reaching the right person.

Target ads ? in theory ? should also drive higher ROI for advertisers. As SEMs know, the return on ad spend (ROAS) is always higher from a search ad (which is fulfilling demand) than a generic display ad (which is creating demand). By adding increased targeting to ad campaigns, you can shift budget from demand fulfillment to demand creation, an ROAS win!

These benefits, however, can disappear quickly in an over-targeting situation. As noted, consumers who feel that you are stalking them can develop negative brand affinity toward your business.

Instead of driving tons of incremental sales from a good customer, you drive that customer away for life (and perhaps turn that customer into a ?net detractor? who spreads ill will about your business across the Internet).

From a tracking perspective, too many targeting campaigns make it almost impossible to truly determine who gets the credit for a sale. Given the fact that tracking cookies from different companies don?t talk to each other, you could quickly end up in a situation where five different providers all believe that they deserve 100% of the credit for a purchase.

If you happened to pay all five of these providers for the sale, you might suddenly find that ad programs that seemed like no-brainers from a ROAS-perspective collectively add up to a negative ROAS result!

Stop Stalking, Start Sculpting!

To go from over-targeting to fine-tuned targeting is a bit of an arduous journey, but one that is ultimately worth the investment. To do it right, I recommend these four steps:

1. Set up attribution tracking.

Attribution may be the official word-of-the-year in online marketing for 2012. Attribution simply means giving proportional credit to a sale to the many clicks and channels that contributed to your customer?s buying decision. So, instead of just last-click tracking, an attribution model gives credit to all clicks.

Attribution tracking fixes the problem of five partners each giving themselves 100% credit for a sale. The downside of attribution is the cost; the leading attribution players (Adometry, C3, ClearSaleing, Convertro, and VisualIQ) typically charge anywhere from $3-$10K/month to use their services. Ouch!

2. ?Set frequency caps ? across all channels, if possible

Once you?ve gotten attribution set up, you can start to see how different channels interact with each other globally. For example, perhaps a successful search on the term [Dracula costume] is almost always preceded by at least three views of a display ad, but users who first click on search and then go to Facebook and click on an ad almost never convert.

You can use this information to set frequency caps (the number of times a user sees your ad on a given channel) and: a) avoid spending money on clicks or impressions that won?t convert; and b) reduce the chances that you are just annoying your users!

This also requires some heavy lifting ? for example, segmenting pools of users based on where they are in the conversion funnel and then setting different frequency caps across different channels accordingly ? but you should have a positive payoff if properly executed.

3. ?Create different targeting messages at each stage

Now that you know which channels deserve credit and how frequently you should blast your message to your potential customer, you can set up different ad creative to reflect the different stages of the user journey.

For example, if you know that people seeing a display retargeting ad are at a much earlier stage than someone you are targeting via AdWords mobile search ads, your display ad should be much more focused on awareness and your mobile ad highly focused on conversion.

4. ?Balance ROAS with Customer Satisfaction

Last, but not least, step out of your aggressive direct-marketer shoes for a moment and think about the lifetime value of a positive relationship with a customer. Sure, you could set a frequency cap of 8X for a segment of your audience and gain an incremental .0002% of profit over a frequency cap of 4X, but you might also alienate some potential customers along the way.

These potential customers might never visit your business again and might complain to their friends about your devious marketing. Successful businesses today weigh profit with customer satisfaction.

Trick Or Treat?

Granular targeting and retargeting across search, social, and display will play a major role in online marketing budgets in the coming years. The diversity and complexity of this tracking, however, will cause many marketers? heads to explode and will create confusing metrics that will trick marketers into making the wrong decisions.

The proper tracking, planning, creative, and attitude can enable you to avoid these problems. Start getting your ducks in a row today, and you can treat your customers to great marketing campaigns while simultaneously boosting your marketing-driven profit dollars!

Gold nanoparticles to detect HIV and prostate cancer with bare eye ...

Gold nanoparticles used in prototype sensor for viewing diseases and viruses with naked eye. Photo:topnews.in

British scientists have revealed a test based on gold nanoparticles which allows the eye to view early stages of a disease or a virus infection, such as prostate cancer or HIV.

The novel detector comprises tiny gold particles deposited on a plastic support, enabling the analysis of the serum contained in the patient?s blood.

If the serum contains distinctive biological markers of disease, such as p24, linked to infection with the virus that triggers AIDS, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) that serves for diagnosis of prostate cancer, then the gold nanoparticles react, providing a blue tint characteristic to this solution which is analyzed by the detector. In the absence of these markers, the particles separate to form tiny bubbles that give solutions a reddish coloring.

According to its inventors, the medical prototype is 10 times more sensitive than the previous tests and 10 times cheaper to manufacture. That should be enough to make poor countries interested in the new test.

?The test is designed on disposable plastic supports and does not require the use of expensive equipment, since the sought molecule can be detected at a quick glance with naked eye,? said Molly Stevens from Imperial College London.

The high sensitivity of this prototype ultra-sensitive sensor makes it suitable for early stage detection of an infection or a disease, when current methods fail, thus providing a greater chance of treatment, e.g. to HIV-positive patients.

?It is important for these patients to be tested periodically to assess the success of retroviral therapies and to detect new cases of infection,? said Roberto Rica, coauthor of the study, published today in the scientific journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Windows 8 demand higher than 7's, says CEO Ballmer

6 hrs.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has a rosy outlook for their new Windows 8 operating system, saying Monday that "we're seeing preliminary demand well above where we were with Windows 7." But other measures indicate that this statement may be somewhat misleading.

Ballmer was speaking at a San Francisco event where Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8?hardware were being showcased. Windows 8 itself officially launched last Friday, but has been available in preview form for more than a year.

Comparing the new OS to its predecessor is natural, but could Windows 8,?which has been intensely polarizing in the tech community, really be more in demand than the incredibly popular Windows 7, which famously fixed what Windows Vista had broken??

To find out, I spoke with?Jay Chou,?senior research analyst at IDC's Worldwide PC Tracker.

While he cautioned that Ballmer may be privy to some statistics not yet publicized, Chou suggested that Windows 8 probably isn't going to move PCs the way Windows 7 did ? but that this has as much to do with the broader PC market as it does with the desirability of the OS.

"Our outlook on Windows 8 is that it will bring somewhat of a boost on the consumer side, but really, its full impact won't be felt till much later. We don't see it as a significant factor that will help the hardware business to recover."

He compared the circumstances of the release to those in 2009, when Windows 7 launched. At the time, millions of consumers and businesses were waiting eagerly for a chance to upgrade, having skipped the poorly?received Windows Vista. Not only that, but netbooks were still selling at high rates, and Windows 7 was a great fit for that type of PC. Windows 7, in other words, arrived just when people wanted to buy into both new hardware and a new operating system.

Now, however, the economy has slowed PC shipments, tablets have replaced netbooks as the best?option for casual computing, and for many people, the upgrade to Windows 7 is still fresh in their minds. Furthermore, Windows 8 isn't a cheap upgrade:

"Cost is a factor," said Chou. "To really take advantage of Windows 8, you need the hardware, the touch capability. You might have to upgrade your mouse or get a multi-touch trackpad."

And while sales of the Surface RT device appear to be fairly brisk, the bulk of consumers running desktops and laptops do not appear to be convinced; Windows 8 likely won't be spiking hardware sales the way its predecessor did.

So how can Ballmer make the statement that demand is higher? The fact is, while sales might not pick up for a year or so, Windows 8 has driven a huge amount of curiosity: the consumer preview of the OS was downloaded more than a million times on the first day.

If Ballmer's statement is interpreted as meaning they've seen unprecedented interest in the OS, then it can be considered factual. But interest does not always translate to sales.?What people could test for free they may not want to pay to own, especially when reviews of the OS are mixed, and?the best experiences rely on new, often costly hardware.

No sales statistics have been released thus far, but it has only been a few days since the official release. Microsoft will be obligated to make some official sales statements soon in order to satisfy investors and build consumer confidence.?We will report any such news, which should appear over the next few weeks.

Mars like Hawaii? NASA rover's first soil studies help fingerprint Martian minerals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has completed initial experiments showing the mineralogy of Martian soil is similar to weathered basaltic soils of volcanic origin in Hawaii.

The minerals were identified in the first sample of Martian soil ingested recently by the rover. Curiosity used its Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin) to obtain the results, which are filling gaps and adding confidence to earlier estimates of the mineralogical makeup of the dust and fine soil widespread on the Red Planet.

"We had many previous inferences and discussions about the mineralogy of Martian soil," said David Blake of NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., who is the principal investigator for CheMin. "Our quantitative results provide refined and in some cases new identifications of the minerals in this first X-ray diffraction analysis on Mars."

The identification of minerals in rocks and soil is crucial for the mission's goal to assess past environmental conditions. Each mineral records the conditions under which it formed. The chemical composition of a rock provides only ambiguous mineralogical information, as in the textbook example of the minerals diamond and graphite, which have the same chemical composition, but strikingly different structures and properties.

CheMin uses X-ray diffraction, the standard practice for geologists on Earth using much larger laboratory instruments. This method provides more accurate identifications of minerals than any method previously used on Mars. X-ray diffraction reads minerals' internal structure by recording how their crystals distinctively interact with X-rays. Innovations from Ames led to an X-ray diffraction instrument compact enough to fit inside the rover.

These NASA technological advances have resulted in other applications on Earth, including compact and portable X-ray diffraction equipment for oil and gas exploration, analysis of archaeological objects and screening of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, among other uses.

"Our team is elated with these first results from our instrument," said Blake. "They heighten our anticipation for future CheMin analyses in the months and miles ahead for Curiosity."

The specific sample for CheMin's first analysis was soil Curiosity scooped up at a patch of dust and sand that the team named Rocknest. The sample was processed through a sieve to exclude particles larger than 0.006 inch (150 micrometers), roughly the width of a human hair. The sample has at least two components: dust distributed globally in dust storms and fine sand originating more locally. Unlike conglomerate rocks Curiosity investigated a few weeks ago, which are several billion years old and indicative of flowing water, the soil material CheMin has analyzed is more representative of modern processes on Mars.

"Much of Mars is covered with dust, and we had an incomplete understanding of its mineralogy," said David Bish, CheMin co-investigator with Indiana University in Bloomington. "We now know it is mineralogically similar to basaltic material, with significant amounts of feldspar, pyroxene and olivine, which was not unexpected. Roughly half the soil is non-crystalline material, such as volcanic glass or products from weathering of the glass. "

Bish said, "So far, the materials Curiosity has analyzed are consistent with our initial ideas of the deposits in Gale Crater recording a transition through time from a wet to dry environment. The ancient rocks, such as the conglomerates, suggest flowing water, while the minerals in the younger soil are consistent with limited interaction with water."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory Project, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, and built Curiosity and CheMin.

Green Blog: In a Parking Lot, Line Workers at the Ready

GLEN BURNIE, Md. ? A forest of bucket trucks bearing license plates from Missouri, Florida and Georgia have converged on a vast unused parking lot near the airport here in preparation for emergency power repairs in the mid-Atlantic region.

Hundreds of workers from other states are massing on the site, where Baltimore Gas and Electric has put up a mess tent, brought in office trailers and Porta Potties and stationed staff members in fluorescent green clothing to dispatch crews.

But so far this is only an army in waiting. Only a few customers were without power as the first torrents of rain hit the Washington-Baltimore area, and the bucket trucks are expected to be useless until the winds from Hurricane Sandy have passed, which might mean waiting until Wednesday.

?We don?t fly the buckets if it?s 25 miles per hour or over,?? said Bill Bush, a BGE crew guide.

But no matter where they are from or where they are ultimately headed, all of the workers know the drill.

Once the winds have subsided, Mr. Bush said, his team is likely to be assigned to a feeder line radiating from a substation that could serve anywhere from 500 to 2,500 customers and work along it for 16 hours a day, moving trees, restringing wires and replacing poles as needed until it is entirely back in service.

But on Monday morning, there was not much to do except hunker down in the mess tent, where caterers provided eggs, hash browns, sausage, orange juice and Mountain Dew.

The power companies rely on an online mutual aid system where they can offer or ask for assistance and on frequent conference calls and one-on-one telephone transactions. With ample warning of Sandra, some of the crews departed for the Baltimore area on Saturday morning and were updated on their precise destination while en route.

Ryan Swanson, 22, who lives in Preston, Mo., said he traveled a little over 1,000 miles with several other trucks from Kiowa Line Builders of Tipton, Mo. He was ?voluntold? to go, he said.

Most of the workers interviewed here said they were happy to volunteer or to be assigned. Arrangements differ by company, but they typically are paid time and a half for every moment of travel, sleep and work, and some get double-time for their working hours. The base pay varies, but $40 an hour is typical.

The host utilities pay more than that to the linemen?s employers and provide meals and laundry service. The trip may last a week, two or three: some might be redispatched from here to hard-hit spots before returning for home.

The ?foreign? crews, as the host utility calls them, are well traveled. Joe Kinslow, 36, of Preston, also dispatched by Kiowa, was in Louisiana and Texas to clean up after hurricanes Gustav and Ike in 2008. And he was in Virginia earlier this year ?for whatever that was,?? as he put it, referring to the derecho, the odd straight-line windstorm that struck the Washington area hard.

Mr. Kinslow, of Halfway, Mo., said he expected to spend the next week or two doing familiar work in unfamiliar places. ?You see a lot of weird place names wherever you go,?? he said.

The mess tent was a blur of sweatshirts, boots, hunting caps with various faded logos, and weathered complexions from years climbing utility poles.

One BGE supervisor who asked not to be named joked that the gathering resembled a pirates convention.

The staging area, one of four created by BGE, parallels other rapidly organized hubs around the Northeast. The host utilities of today are tomorrow?s donors: BGE has sent help to Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Texas and Florida, said Rachael Lighty, a spokeswoman for the utility.

For this storm, BGE requested 3,000 linemen and tree trimmers, and more than half that number were in place by Monday morning, she said. Even when it is too windy to work, as it is now, she said, utilities in the region are locating and evaluating damage.

Greece says EU/IMF lenders refuse to concede on reforms

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's foreign lenders have refused to make any further concessions on changes to labour laws contested by a junior coalition partner, the country's finance minister said on Sunday, prolonging an impasse on a crucial austerity package.

Athens has been locked in talks with its European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders on the austerity package for months, but a final agreement has been held up by the small Democratic Left party's refusal to back the new wage laws.

The party, which says the changes undermine labour rights, has said it will vote against the measures when they are put to a parliamentary vote next week.

The party has demanded the troika of European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF lenders allow a national wage agreement to apply to all employees rather than just unionized workers. It also wants the lenders to withdraw a plan to axe the 10 percent salary hike employees get when they marry.

"The troika has not accepted the (party's) demands," Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras told reporters.

A government official, who declined to be named, said Athens would present the bill on labour and other measures in parliament on November 5.

Near-bankrupt Greece needs a comprehensive deal on the austerity package and reforms to unlock its next tranche of aid before it runs out of cash in mid-November. Greece's gross public debt is equivalent to 171 percent of its economic output, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The Democratic Left party has the support of 16 deputies in the 300-seat parliament and the government - which has a 176-seat majority - could pass the package without its support.

But a vote against the package by the party would undermine the already fragile coalition and perhaps tempt other lawmakers to defect and vote against unpopular measures.

The austerity package contains spending cuts and tax measures worth 13.5 billion euros as well as a long list of structural reforms to kick-start Greece's failing economy.

Fitch: US money funds dip toes back into Europe

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The big U.S. money market funds are loaning more to banks in the 17-country eurozone as fears ease over the continent's debt crisis and shaky financial system.

Fitch, the credit ratings agency, said Monday that the 10 largest U.S. funds increased their exposure for the third straight month in September. The funds now have 10.6 percent of their holdings in credit to European banks, up 16 percent from August.

The agency said that is because actions by central banks have reduced turmoil and volatility in the financial system. The European Central Bank has said it is willing to buy the bonds of indebted governments on financial markets, lowering their borrowing costs and the chance they might default.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is also buying financial assets to increase the supply of money in the U.S. economy and support growth.

Money funds take cash from investors and put it to work in credit markets ? by lending to banks for short periods of time, for example.

The money funds had pulled back from lending to European banks because of fears they might run into trouble and not repay the money. But now fund managers are making modest increases in the amounts of bank commercial paper and CDs that they hold.

European banks are troubled because many are still working off big losses on government bonds that have fallen in value and on loans made during soured real estate booms in countries like Spain and Ireland.

Despite the recent increase, money funds' exposure to Europe remains just 70 percent what it was before the crisis, and won't soon return to earlier levels, Fitch analysts said.

That's because of lingering investor caution toward the eurozone. It's also because banks are relying less on the more volatile forms of getting credit. Borrowing from money funds can be volatile for a bank because borrowing rates can fluctuate. As a result, some banks are focusing on safer ways of financing, such as attracting more customer deposits.

The Fitch Ratings study measured the lending of the top 10 prime money funds by size, with $646 billion under investment, or about 45 percent of the $1.4 trillion in total U.S. money fund assets.

Hubble sees violent star formation episodes in dwarf galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the faint irregular galaxy NGC 3738, a starburst galaxy. The galaxy is in the midst of a violent episode of star formation, during which it is converting reservoirs of hydrogen gas located in the galaxy's center into stars. Hubble spots this gas glowing red around NGC 3738, one of the most distinctive signs of ongoing star formation.

Lying in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear), NGC 3738 is located about 12 million light-years from the sun, and belongs to the Messier 81 group of galaxies. This galaxy -- first observed by astronomer William Herschel back in 1789 -- is a nearby example of a blue compact dwarf, the faintest type of starburst galaxy. Blue compact dwarfs are small compared to large spiral galaxies -- NGC 3738 is around 10,000 light-years across, just one tenth of the size of the Milky Way.

This type of galaxy is blue in appearance by virtue of containing large clusters of hot, massive stars, which ionize the surrounding interstellar gas with their intense ultraviolet radiation. They are relatively faint and appear to be irregular in shape. Unlike spirals or elliptical galaxies, irregular galaxies do not have any distinctive features, such as a nuclear bulge or spiral arms. Rather, they are extremely chaotic in appearance. These galaxies are thought to resemble some of the earliest that formed in the Universe and may provide clues as to how stars appeared shortly after the Big Bang.

This image was created by combining visual and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The field of view of the Wide Field Channel is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes wide.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Boeing is encouraging its suppliers to attend a workshop next month to learn how to outsource business to Mexico.

The Seattle Times reports that Patrick McKenna, director of Supply Chain Strategy and Supplier Management at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, has urged suppliers to attend a Nov. 15 workshop in Chicago to learn how to do business in Mexico.

?Several of our suppliers have successfully set up factories in Mexico because of the numerous advantages that Mexico offers to aerospace suppliers,? McKenna wrote in a letter dated Oct. 17. ?Boeing will be sending several people to this event, and we wanted to inform our supply base of this opportunity.?

The event?s organizers will waive the $200 registration fees for Boeing suppliers, he said.

Tom Wroblewski, president of District 751 of the International Association of Machinists, reacted to the letter in political terms.

?We?d think that Boeing CEO Jim McNerney, as chairman of President Obama?s council on exports, would be particularly sensitive to the importance of exporting American products, not jobs,? said Wroblewski, via email. ?We plan on talking to Boeing about this. We believe it is counterproductive to what we are trying to accomplish here.?

Boeing spokesman Larry Wilson said ?it?s a matter of routine business? to keep the company?s suppliers informed of opportunities to expand their capacity around the world.

American Industries Group, a private company that helps locate manufacturing operations in Mexico, is running the workshop.

It can build or lease facilities there for corporate clients and also offers administrative support including human resources, customs, accounting and environmental regulatory approval, according to workshop coordinator Myrna De Las Casas.

American Industries has helped more than 200 corporations get started in Mexico, ?80 percent of them from the U.S.,? she said.

Boeing started promoting the event just recently, De Las Casas said, and she expects some to join the 18 companies already signed up.

Kacsmar: Just what is going on with the AFC?

NFC best conference, and not only because 3 AFC teams have winning records

Image: Tom BradyAP

Tom Brady's Patriots have beaten just one team with a winning record in their last 19 victories.

OPINION

By Scott Kacsmar

updated 1:57 p.m. ET Oct. 25, 2012

You had a great run, AFC. But the NFC has taken the torch ? by force. The 2012 season is the year we will remember as when the NFC reclaimed their spot as the league?s best conference.

The NFL is cyclical. When the NFC was the dominant conference, their teams won 13 consecutive Super Bowls (1984-1996 seasons). After the 1997 Denver Broncos broke the dry spell, the AFC won nine of the next 12 Super Bowls.

As is usually the case, the balance of power swung back and stayed with the AFC thanks to superior talent at the two key positions of head coach and quarterback. Bill Belichick found Tom Brady in New England, Tony Dungy was the best coach for Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger won Super Bowls under Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh.

Those three teams and quarterbacks have started the last nine Super Bowls for the AFC, and 10 of the past 11. They have also been the class of the AFC, enjoying three of the most successful runs in NFL history.

But nothing stays the same forever. All three lost their most recent Super Bowl over the last three seasons, shifting the power back to the NFC and their prolific combinations at coach and quarterback.

Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning have bested Brady and Belichick in two Super Bowls. Two 2006 rookie coaches, Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy, paired up with dominant quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. They have won the last three championships (four of the last five).

More than just the Super Bowl wins, the NFC has recently been dominating the AFC in the regular season.

201131-330.484

Total363-303-20.545

Even when the AFC was at its best, 2004 (14-9) and 2006 (12-15), their non-conference record through seven weeks was never as gaudy as the 19-9 (.679) mark the NFC holds this season. It comes after winning the 2011 season series, 33-31, for the first time since the league went to eight divisions in 2002.

Last year appeared to be an aberration for the AFC with Peyton Manning?s neck surgeries derailing the Colts? season. Matt Schaub went down after 10 games in Houston. Philip Rivers? play deteriorated. Ben Roethlisberger had a high-ankle sprain late in the season. Things should have improved this year through healing alone.

But that has not been the case, and it shows up in the marquee match-ups.

  • Peyton Manning threw three interceptions in Atlanta (4-0 against the AFC West) on a Monday night game. He has one interception the rest of the season.
  • Baltimore?s first loss of the season was to Philadelphia after leading 17-7 at halftime.
  • Houston, widely considered the best AFC team, was blown out at home 42-24 by a Green Bay team who came in struggling.
  • New England has already lost to Arizona and Seattle.

Teams buried in the NFC playoff race right now could be leading or tied for the lead in certain AFC divisions.

How did the NFC take control?
These changes do not happen overnight. Without much consistent winning, the NFC has used high draft picks to add significant talent since 2007, such as Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, Clay Matthews, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Aldon Smith, Jason Pierre-Paul, Earl Thomas, Julio Jones, and Robert Griffin III.

In that time the NFC has also acquired through trade or free agency former AFC players such as Jared Allen, Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Michael Turner, Marshawn Lynch, Vincent Jackson, Tony Gonzalez, Cortland Finnegan, and Darren Sproles.
  • Nine teams this season are averaging over 25.0 points per game, and six are from the NFC.
  • Of the 11 teams allowing fewer than 21.0 points per game, nine are from the NFC, including the top four.
  • Eight of the 10 teams allowing the most points per game are from the AFC.
  • Seven of the top 10 teams in turnover differential are from the NFC.

The NFC only has two teams (at best) with serious quarterback issues. The Eagles already have a successor behind Michael Vick (Nick Foles), while the Cardinals deal with injuries and inconsistencies from John Skelton and Kevin Kolb. St. Louis (Bradford), Carolina (Newton) and Detroit (Stafford) each wish their No. 1 overall pick was playing better right now, but those players are not going anywhere next year.

The AFC could see quarterback changes (this year or next) in Buffalo, New York, Kansas City, while situations with Tennessee, Jacksonville, Oakland and even San Diego are anything but stable. That is seven of the 16 teams.

The five best quarterbacks in the AFC were all drafted in 2004 or earlier. The cupboards have not been properly restocked around the conference, leading to the NFC?s resurgence.

While new social media tools launch every day, most businesses really only need to focus on the major players: Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Monitoring Social Media

An important part of leveraging social media for business is to understand what conversations are happening online related to your industry and recognizing where you should respond. Here are some great tools you can use to easily monitor your business and industry mentions in social media:

? Google Alerts: Set up multiple Google Alerts for your company, brand, products, leaders, industry terms, etc. The alerts will get delivered directly to your email inbox at the frequency you indicate (e.g. daily or as they happen) and is a great way to help you track mentions of your brand and relevant keywords on the web on news sites, in blogs, etc.

? Twitter: Monitor mentions of your brand on Twitter with tools like Twitter

Search or HootSuite.

CoTweet is also a great tool to help manage multiple

users on a corporate Twitter account and allows you to assign particular tweets to the appropriate team member for follow-up.

? Google Reader and RSS Feeds: Set up RSS feeds in Google Reader of searches of your brand or industry keywords in other popular social media sites such as Flickr, Digg, Delicious, etc. Scan the results in your reader daily for mentions.

? Facebook Insights: Stay on top of and participate in discussions occurring on your company?s Facebook Fan Page. Use your Fan Page?s Facebook Insights Dashboard (found in the left sidebar when you?re on your page as an admin) to show you stats such as fan growth and page views to gauge your page?s interaction and engagement.

Getting Started With Twitter for Business

Twitter is a social network on which users share short,

140-character messages with each other. Users "follow" or subscribe to each other and can receive messages from each other via multiple technology devices including desktop computers, smart phones, and text messages. As mentioned previously, for business, it is best to use Twitter?s free search engine, Twitter Search to search for your business, competitors, and industry mentions on Twitter. Understanding how and if people are talking about your business and industry will give you enough information to determine if you should invest the time to start and manage a Twitter account for your business.

If you decide that Twitter is right for your business, visit Twitter.com to sign up for a free account. Here are a few tips for setting up a business Twitter account:

? Use the name of your business as your Twitter username.

? Use your business logo or a picture of the person managing the account as the profile image for the account.

? Create a custom Twitter background that provides additional information about your business.

? Use Advanced Twitter Search to help determine industry influencers and potential customers that your business should follow.

Using Facebook for Business

With more than 1 billion users, Facebook has become the major player in the social media industry. Facebook can serve as a powerful platform for building a community of advocates for your business to help increase word-of-mouth marketing. The first step in leveraging Facebook for business is to set up a business page.

LinkedIn: The Social Network for Business Professionals

The social network businesspeople may be most familiar with is LinkedIn. This network of over 101 million business users and more than 1 million business profile pages can be an important resource. To get started using LinkedIn for your business, it is best to set up and complete a personal profile for yourself as well as a company profile for your business. When setting up these profiles, remember to include all important information such as your website and blog URLs. Additionally, it is important to take the time to make the descriptions for you and your business interesting to read and an accurate reflection of your experience, knowledge, and passion.

LinkedIn Groups

Once you have created profiles, LinkedIn has two major features that are of particular use to businesses and their employees. The first feature you should examine is the Groups feature. The Groups feature allows LinkedIn users to create and participate in discussions around a topic within LinkedIn. Groups can be a great way to make potential business connections, but can also be a great place to share relevant blog content.

LinkedIn Answers

The second feature, LinkedIn Answers, allows you to find people publicly stating?they have a specific problem or need that your product or service would solve.?Identifying these questions and responding with a resources or a blog article of?yours that answers that person?s need can offer a great marketing opportunity for?your business. Ultimately, you can generate high-quality traffic to your blog from?LinkedIn Answers, and get some really qualified leads as well.
