Rewind 2012: T'Cha Dunlevy's Top 10 movies

1. Beasts of the Southern Wild. Where the Wild Things Are meets hurricane Katrina in Benh Zeitlin?s sweeping, bracing tale of a little girl (Quvenzhan? Wallis, awaiting her Oscar nomination) and her drugged-up dad fighting for their lives in the Louisiana bayou.

2. De rouille et d?os (Rust and Bone). Like its title suggests, Jacques Audiard?s story of a whale trainer (Marion Cotillard) who suffers a terrible accident and the boxer/deadbeat dad (Matthias Schoenaerts) who pulls her out of her morbid funk was the most raw movie experience of the year.

3. Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson brings awesome back with this wonderful lark of a film about a boy scout and a bookworm who run away from home and find true love.

4. The Turin Horse. A nearly wordless black-and-white film about a farmer and his daughter living out their days in weary resignation doesn?t sound like fun, but it?s pure cinema poetry. Respect, B?la Tarr.

5. Django Unchained. Call it Quentin Unchained as Tarantino unleashes a wildly irreverent, provocative and thoroughly entertaining epic about a slave-turned-cowboy, out for revenge.

6. Rebelle. Quebec director Kim Nguyen brings a disarmingly personal tone to his story of an African child soldier (Rachel Mwanza) struggling to find meaning in her life through a harrowing ordeal.

7. Amour. Nguyen?s big competition for the best foreign-language film Oscar may be Michael Haneke?s evocative chamber piece about an elderly couple facing sickness and death with dignity.

8. Skyfall. James Bond is back, yo. With Sam Mendes at the helm, Daniel Craig leading the charge and Javier Bardem as his foil, Skyfall takes its place among the franchise?s finest moments.

9. Stories We Tell. To reveal a family secret close to her heart, Sarah Polley turned to everyone around her. She emerged with a thoughtful treatise on relationships, secrets and the mysteries of the past.

10. Killer Joe. The Exorcist mastermind William Friedkin has a blast in this raunchy, suspenseful noir romp about a crooked cop (Matthew McConaughey) who moonlights as a contract killer.

Honourable mentions: Searching for Sugar Man, The Master, Oslo: August 31st, Detropia, Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present, Inch?Allah, Pink Ribbons Inc., Camion, The Dark Knight Rises, L?enfant d?en haut, Tomboy, Take This Waltz, Laurence Anyways, Bernie, Ma vie r?elle, Bestiaire.
